Hey guys i need a little info from the ones out there that have killed a turkey or turkeys with a bow and arrow for an upcoming presentation I'm doing on Bowhunting Turkeys for PBS. Could you PM me one fact..Where did your broadhead hit your turkey? thanks for the help..It will be an interesting slide. Joey Buchanan

The only one I've shot was strutting and I pinned its' wings together. Too bad to, because the breasts were pretty bloodshot.

Mysticquido...IMO the burlap target face is very misleading...too much breast muscle in that circle ( 1/3 of it) from around 2-6 o'clock. That circle needs to move to the left a bit. Really center over between the legs...Heres a NBEF slide.

Joey, the one I shot the broadhead hit right at the top of the legs, probably a little below the actual drumstick part. Usually my broadhead goes about an inch over their back or under their belly...

I shoot them straight up from the leg an inch or so.If you don't kill instantly,you take out the legs,which they also need to get flying.............no running,no flying.....pretty easy to get to even if they aren't dead by the time you walk up to them.

Thanks Joe, i get around each year to posting it sometime or another. You have to go up those legs no matter what the pose. Now go kill that Cohutta Gobbler and we will all :notworthy:

My "old reliable" stand is a strutt zone in an upper corner of a field.
I wait untill he's in full strutt and all fanned out with his back facing directly at me. Then I shoot him right above the root of his tail.
I've never had one go over 50 yards,and most just roll around untill I get ahold of them.

I have only killed one with my LB, and it was a spine shot, got lucky and the old tom dropped right there!

The best kills with a bow were between the wings facing away, If facing me just above the beard or bace of neck, broadside above the drumsticks, I know when cleaning them you really got to dig the lungs out from the backbone and rib cage which tells me you want to pick a spot plenty high on the bird. The ones I had the hardest time finding are the ones I thought I dead centered.

Have been fortunate enought to arrow two (and miss a couple...) My successful shots were at the base of the neck (while bird was facing me), and through both legs (broadside). Good luck. Love that illustration from joebuck! Really goes to show you how much extra "space" is there that isn't vital.

Thanks Carparcher, I'll post the results on that same diagram I'm building. Interesting note from me is that my kills range from middle neck all the way to the butt!

Killed 4. All kills were directly above the drumsticks. The ones I've screwed up I hit too far forward in the breast which doesn't work at all.

Joe, I have a few pictures if you need them.
I prefer the going away back shot, That way if you are high or low or a little off to the side you still will get your bird. :pray: Or a clean miss.
They are pretty tuff some times even if the shot looks good. Curt sold me on the string tracker last year when he was here. Looking forward to using one when the Hope bow gets here for turkey season.
Don't get me wrong, If a side shot presents itself I will take it. But like you said use the legs for a guide. A turkey has to have its legs to spring into the air. They drop like a rock if you hit both.

That some good stuff guys. I shoot my bow with quiver off. Heres a mod a made to an anter limb knob I made for my bow to shoot a string tracker. Just drill and JB Weld. NOTICE the 30# tracker thread not 17#.....

I shot mine from above and the bird was facing me the arrow struck the top of the back where the neck attaches to the body and then my arrow went through the center of the bird instant death bird did not go anywhere

Thinking of trying a string tracker this year, where can I find the 30 lb line??

jeff i bought about 12 spools in 1995 from Game Tracker direct. i'm not sure they are called game tracker or still in business. practice with the 17# and if you can't find any 17# right before season I'll mail you one of my 30#.....

I killed an eastern last year with my Swamprooter recurve. Hit him between the beard and the base of his neck. He didn't even flop much.

If you look at the vitals of a real turkey instead of where they put them on targets you will see the heart sits right on top and just forward of the hips and that is where I always try to shoot them when they are broadside.
In strut facing away, right below the poop chute, facing you just below the beard. Those shots have always worked very well for me. Wing butt is great, if you can hit it, but shoot just a little forward, back or high and you have a wounded bird! Mark

Thanks Mark , your defitnitely one of the most experienced on here, fellows take his advice. Hopefully you'll have time this spring to drop that bowfishing bow and chase those gobblers some.

I hit it where the neck meets the back. Right where I was aiming. High is a clean miss, low hit is in the vitals, and of course, right on breaks the spine.

So far 90% have shot their bird Not Strutting. Also nobody has gutt shot one and found it except me?!....

I'm no expert. I've only killed 4 with my bow. But. I prefer to shoot them in full strut from behind. Centered in the middle of the back.
Broadside, I prefer them standing errect and shoot them through the legs 3" to 5" above where the feathers meet the skin. If walking broadside I try to shoot them high at the base of the wing. Be careful not to shoot them through the breast. The turkey is the only big game animal you can shoot through the center of the chest and not kill. I lost one that way.

Above the drumsticks and in the head. head and neck shots are all I consider now.

I've killed several with shots at top of leg, where leg connects to the body. I killed one with a shot to neck, barely cutting his throat, which was fully stetched out while he eyeballed the countryside for trouble. On this one, I shot where I was looking, but unfortunately, not where I wanted the arrow to go. Blind hog find an acorn every now and then. :archer:

14 people out of 1000 plus ( i'm guessing on how many visit each day) Gangers have killed a bird with tradgear ...1.4%....so far responded

I've killed a few birds and I am a proponent of a couple of inches over the drumsticks. I try to stay away from the breast. Most 3D turkeys have a kill zone in a place I wouldn't aim for unless I was using a Bullhead or similar head.

By the way, in my area, you can kill two birds in the spring and two in the fall. I've managed to limit out for the last 6 years.

Joey, I have recovered a couple of gut shot birds, but it was 3-4 days later(I never quit looking for what I think is a fatal hit)...thats why I have a string tracker ordered. Thanks for the info on the string, got it ordered too. Only have 1 kill in full strut, facing away..hit him in spine (shot a little high thru fan). Glad you're not counting full strut misses.

Hey what about a fish arrow on a reel with a friend ready with a ballbat, that way the kill zone would get much bigger. better check my regulations first.

Heres the the plotting of kill shots from TradGangers. My Conclusions: IMO ..the ole statement "turkeys are hard to kill because of small kill zone is not true." Turkeys are hard HIT because they are small. Black dots are broadside shots and Magenta are left and right entrys.

I`ve killed a couple of gobblers throught the wingbut then I shot forward a couple of inches and watched one fly across the river. Then I got shooting lessons from Biggie and have shot the rest just above the drum sticks with the exception of one hight that I broke the spine and another low I cut one leg almst off and "hemmed" up in a fence row. The shot was below the feathers. Heres one from last year shot above the drumsticks and fell on the spot.RC

I've made contact with two birds (clipped feathers on a few others). The bird I hit broadside clipped the heart and she (hens are legal in the fall here in VA) still managed to get airborne and lock wings. Found her in the creek 80 yards away. I was aiming above the legs. The other was a centerpunch through the back pinning him to the ground (another Fall bird - shot from treestand). He backed off the arrow and walked away, never found him.
BTW - both were passthroughs, I put a fender washer behind my broadheads now.

One just above the leg entry with exit just below off side wing - ran and flew recovered where it landed. One in the neck - DRT

I've had the best luck aiming for center mass straight above the legs. Twice, it's taken them out within 20 yds (one 3 yd recovery). Another bird, it destroyed the off-side hip and allowed me to follow up with another arrow.
The ideal angle for bowhunters is still the Texas Heart Shot IMO.

Top part of the drumstick going in, quartering away. Took out the heart. Arrow passed through. Also, just into the bottom of the chest cavity above the breast bone. That one also caught a piece of the heart. In that case, the broadhead imbedded in the heavy breast bone. Didn't get it out until after we ate the bird.

From behind, bird running away. Base of the head/ top of neck. Aimed at the base of the neck but shot high. Lucky shot: severed the juggular, bird dropped on the spot.

Broadside. low between the legs. Evicerated the bird and it didn't go more than 20 yards.

RC..I had to teach Biggie again how to kill a big Hawg in Fl this weekend. Also I had to show him how to miss a gobbler again
