Some of you may remember I built one of my versions of the Rocky Mtn. Recurve earlier this year.
Well earlier this week I started a new one.
I think this will be the wildest version of this bow you will ever see.
The riser is Hondurous (sp) Rosewood and Birdseye Maple. The limbs have Flaming Ambrosia Maple veneers and A-boo core.
I had picked up a shed Red Deer antler a few years ago while hog hunting in TX. and thought it would make for great accents on the riser and limbs.
I'll be adding it to the limbs in due time. Right now the limbs havn't even been tapered at the tips.
I'm hoping for 57-58# at 29"

Thats some sweet looking maple Troy.
Lets see some more when you get it finished.

Man! Troy that's going to be a great bow. Tony
Thumbs up, that is some kinda pretty!!!
I've got my antler pieces already cut and ground for the limb bolt pads and well as tips.
I think this is going to be the wildest looking bow I've ever built.
Troy
Looking Great!Nice work!
Love it so far!
Troy that one is going to be a looker for sure. Keep us posted
Did the rough out on the limbs this morning. Tiller was a breeze, less than 30 minutes. Looks like it's going to come out a little under the weight I had hoped for. Still have final sanding to do on the limbs and right now they are pulling 55#@ 29". If I can squeek by with as little sanding as possible I'll still be happy with the weight.
I glued the overlays on the limbs and have them in a nice warm place. I should have the riser shaped and sanded by later this evening. I'll post pics of the riser tonight.
Troy
It was a hot one today, but I managed to get the riser shaped and sanded to prefection.

I really like the character in this piece of Rosewood.

I even managed to get the first coat of epoxy sealent on. Looks like it's going to take several coats to fill he grain. Still not a problem as far as I'm concerned.

You do some great work Troy...this one is one of my favs!
You do some great work Troy...this one is one of my favs!
That is sharp...
what are the specs on your bow? riser length, limb length, stack thickness? I have a form I got from a guy based on the rocky mountain recurve. I'm trying to gather some info for future bows. Thanks for any info.
Troy that looks great looks like you only cut the riser to be centre shot this time Thanks Shane
Shane,
Yes, I only cut the window to center. With the narrow riser of the RMR design cutting past center is risky in my book.
Here are afew more pics. I dressed the tips and limb bolt pads. The Red Stag antler really adds to the limbs.
I also got to shoot it for the first time today. It pulls smooth and really cast and arrow with authority.

Very nice! That antler does look good on the limbs- it does look like a shooter. What length is this one?
Trux,
It's a 62" pulling 55#@29"
Troy
Nice job Troy, bet you will enjoy that one.
Jess,
Still have several coats of epoxy sealer to put on before spraying with Fullerplast.
I like to fill all the pores then spray. Gives the bow a smooth finish.
Troy
Figured out this morning why the bow came out a little lighter in weight than I had wanted.
Guess I can't add any more.
When figuring the total stack thickness I messed up and came up with a higher number than it really was. That and the glass I bought was advertised as .043 thickness and after checking one of the drop pieces the thickness was really .040
That was the real killer. Take off .006" per limb and the weight will be off.
Still the bow shoots great and has enough weight to take care of anything I'll hunt around here.
Troy
Troy that is one cool bow. Awesome piece of functional art. Now all you need are some streaks of red splashed on it. hope to see you in Brownstown this fall.
looks good Troy, Are you gonna be at the hunt?
Chris and Brent,
Gonna do my best to be there. That is if I'm still in OH.
Troy
Did the final sanding on the bow's sealent finish this morning. Looks like I have all the pores filled and it's smooth as I can ask for.
After that I stippled the grip. Normally I stipple before starting to apply sealent, but this time I'm trying something different due to the sealent filling in around the stippling. I'll apply a couple coats of sealent to the stippling then spray.
I also applied sealent inside the limb bolt holes and alienment pin holes. Havn't seen many folks talk about doing this. I do it on all my bows. I don't trust that the spray will make it all the way in and do it's job. Can't chance getting caught in a heavy downpour and having moisture get into the limbs from unsealed spots.
I'll be spraying with the Fullerplast one day this week.
Afterwards I'll post pics of the finished bow.
Troy
That bow looks awesome, very nice job.

I think overtightening bolts gets blamed for splitting limbs when this is actually possibly the culprit.
Great lookin bow Troy!!
Kenny,
I started doing this several years ago. After a week long hunt in rain and bitter cold I had problems. It would warn up enough during the day to rain instead of snow, but at night it would drop into the upper teens.
After returning home I noticed a hair line crack in one wedge. Can't say for sure if the swelling was due to the moisture or if it was from freezing at night.
Anyway, since then when I build a bow I take a Q-tip and rub atleast two coats of epoxy sealent (Massey Finish) in the holes. Since then I've not had any problem.
Troy
Yep, me too. Haven't had one crack yet, and I crank em pretty tight!
Me too, cheap insurance, I even put some wax in the holes and on the pins before shipping. Hopefully between the finish and wax the hole will be water tite. I think adding a little wax to the holes and pins every once in awhile is good idea, they get some wear to the finish with normal use taking apart and putting together.
Finally got a few minutes this morning to knock off the high gloss from the Fullerplast and set the bow up for shooting. After about 25 shots I'm finding it really like my 800gr arrows. A little more tuning and I'll be ready to shoot, shoot and shoot some more to get ready for hunting season.

Nice work!
Very nice, Troy!!
Some day I'll have a take down and when that day comes... I would love for it to look even 1/10 like this one.
Great job!
Awesome limbs on a sweet bow.
Looking nice Troy, Can we see a close-up on that stippled grip please?
I have been thinking about giving that a try. how did you like doing it?
I still have that pkg to send out to you but I keep forgeting to run it to town. Prolly first of the week
CTT
Chuck,
Stippling is easy. Just use a Dremel with a ball end bit. I've stippled the grip on every bow I've built for the past year.
My next trick is to learn how to checker a grip. Been checking into it and found that the tools needed to do it isn't as pricy as I first thought.

Looks pretty good Troy, Thanks for the pics.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words on my work. To me it just a hobby and a way to releive boredom.
Troy
That looks like a sweet shooting bow, love the limbs and grip. Enjoy shooting that one a bunch!

Wild is an under statement Troy!!! Sweeeeeet stick :)
Hi Troy!
Thanks for directing me to this location on the website. I'm looking forward to seeing pics of the completed bow, once you finish the bow limbs and get every completed to your satisfaction. Sure looks great so far. I envy your craftsmanship! Cool!
Oops! Should have gone to the last page of this post to see the completed bow! Super work! Looks like it might be time for you to try to build a bow similar to a Norm Johnson " Blacktail Elite". It looks like you could do it!!!!!
Beautiful bow Troy!!!
It looks fantastic.....really nice wood combos and the antler really sets it off! :notworthy:
Very nice work, Troy ! That bow is just awesome ! I'm not that much of a recurve or take down - guy, but when I see your bow I might getting weak and reconsider.

Troy that is so sweet.
