Title: Wax in take-down sleeve?
Post by: Johan van Niekerk on June 23, 2012, 08:37:00 AM
What do you use in a take-down sleeve to make the bow more quiet? I have a 2 piece with a brass/stainless sleeve system but it can get very noisey. I've tried rubbing some string wax on the male side and it helps quiet it down lots BUT only for about 20-30 shots. I suspect the sleeve doesn't form a proper vacuum. Any suggestions?

Johan,
here's the solution, not sure if you can get these in SA, but buy yourself a $0.99 wax toilet ring at the hardware store, problem solved!!
If you cannot get them there let me know and I will send you one.(works great for strings to)
Take care.

Would I stick the entire thing into the handle? Or just rub it onto the male part? Is that a softish wax?

Oh, and on the topic...we have so much sh*t in this country I'm confident I'll be able to find a wax ring like that somewhere *rofl*  :D

Johan,
you would just rub some on the Brass part that slides into the sleeve, one ring will do you a lifetime.
It is a very sticky wax, I will almost guarantee it will solve your problem.
Let me know how it works out for you.
Bert.

@ Osagetree: Nope  :)  That baby still seals like a dream, AND has made me the envy of every local trad archer who's seen it  :)  The bow giving problems is an horrendously expensive custom built one I waited more than 2 years for. I've been trying my best to bag a kill with your bow, but thus far my year has been very quiet. We're getting so much rain I've considered taking a speargun on my next hunt  :)  AT least it beats the drought we had the 3 years before the rain came back...

@ Bert: Thanks for the advise. I just tried it and it works like a charm  :D  And that soft wax is wonderfull stuff! Especially at the price (R19 rands here = about $3). I've even stuffed a small tin to the brim full of the toilet seal wax and it will now go into my permanent hunting box for all kinds of general purpose waxing.

Johan,
Glad I could help, it's one of those things that are inexpensive and there should be a film canister in everyone's quiver.
Take care.

Better than a film canister full is a tin from those no.11 muzzle loader precussion caps.
