Title: Different Colored Bows
Post by: Freonite on April 05, 2012, 02:00:00 PM
Hey Guys,

I have been lurking on here for a while and drooling over all the bows you guys put out. I am really wanting to try my hand at building a bow but I have two kids under the age of two and free time is a little hard to come by. The urge is going to get worse too because my dad, an old industrial arts teacher, is going to be selling his house soon. In his basement he has a full woodworking shop (table saw, band saw, drill press, jointer, radial arm saw, belt/disc sander, etc) and since we just bought 6 acres, he wants to build me a shop to keep all his tools in along with his boat and atv.

Anyway I was curious to see some of the bows that you guys have built that are not standard wood colors. Hopefully I should have something to contribute soon!

There you go.. some stains I have used on maple.  I also have stained ash and hickory which stain better than the maple.

Sweet archery gods, Bradford... you could have left off that last one!

  :scared:

Seriously, though, nice work.

Grey my 16yr old daughter loves that last one. I am glad too since it is hers.

Nice use of colors Bradford, I was wanting to build a couple using the dark Blue or Jade Green Dymalux for the riser and black glass.

Yeah.. I was looking at that dymalux.. good stuff and the colors are awesome.

I was also thinking of building one with the charcoal dymondwood with yellow heart.. that would be a great contrast.

My other ideas was using the dymalux with an accent wood.. say the blue with hickory (died black), then using a fabric under the glass like a blue camo..

LOTS of ideas.

I am always trying to blend the modern with the old world.. I am weird that way..hehehe

Nothing wrong with that. I do the same thing with arrows and the results can be pretty special.

Purple hickory bow with pink string for the wife.

And a little fun with sinew and food coloring for any future kids bows.

Those are all pretty sweet. I would love to try a bow a black glass and a charcoal color stain with some red phenolic accents in the riser. But that is a pretty tall order since I haven't started building yet.

These are probably the most untraditional  traditional bows I have made. The first one was made to match a guys speed boat and the second was made to match a guys Harley.

 Geboon ebony, yellowheart, and bloodwood.

Gaboon ebony, curley maple flames airbrushed with red and yellow dye and yellowheart pinstripes.

Many years ago I let my kids paint their own bows.  I still have both bows, just waiting on grandkids now.

WOW, those flames look awesome. Great job Bodork. I built one with my daughter and she wanted to have it in Safari design.
