ok so here is what I want to do clean up an old bear bow.I want to sand it down an refinish it I would like to know the steps to take.I have never done this before my questions are what grit of paper? what type of finish to use? spray or wipe on .also what type of pen do I use to rewrite the specs back on to the bow thanks for your help.I am doing this for my son Iam not working right now I am awaiting surgery an I am going nuts I need something to do.please help I want to get started as soon as I get the info I need thankyou all ED
It depends on the condition. If there are just a few nicks etc I would lightly sand with 200-320 grit or 0000 & 00 steel wool, wipe off all dust & spray with minwax spar urethane satin or gloss or krylon crystal clear acrylic spray.
If you want to completely strip it to bare wood, 150 grit to, 200,320,400 etc then apply your choice of finish. If you choose this route do not significantly sand into the fiberglass as it may change tiller & draw weight.
If you have oily woods then seal them first with shellac or ca glue so the wood is sealed & the finish will dry.
Post pics if you can. Good luck & have fun.
thanks for your help Iam getting started today ED
