Title: If nothing else, she's got a great personality
Post by: Bodork on March 27, 2012, 10:43:00 PM
Well, I finally finished the bow I was working on. If you read my earlier post, it had a hairline split in the myrtle veneer that grew into a full blown gully under the glass when I glued it up. Despite being 'damaged goods' this bow is really a pleasure to shoot. Nice, smooth draw, no hand shock and very quiet. It pulls lighter than I anticipated at 37#@28". I normally shoot a 52# bow but this bow is very impressive. The arrow doesn't seem to drop much at all until you get well past 20 yards. It will be a fun 3-d bow.
The riser is curly walnut with a macassar ebony stripe. The ebony is flanked by .030 actionwood. The cores are brown actionwood as well. The veneers are figured myrtle. The overlays are macassar ebony, walnut and myrtle. Tip overlays have black phenolic instead of ebony. I dyed the myrtle overlays, riser, and the edge of the limb cores several times with walnut leather dye and very lightly buffed it between each coat.
It is a 62" er. I think she will hold together just fine in spite of the split in the veneer. I hope to put it to the test this weekend at the local 3-d shoot.
The braced picture makes the bow look shorter and fatter than it actually is. The last picture shows the split in the veneer. Thanks for taking a look! Mike

Very attractive bow even with the flaw.

Nothing wrong with a little cosmetic flaw.  Good looks wear off real fast if what really matters isn't solid.  In bows and other matters as well.

It still looks great and @ 37 pounds it would be an awesome 3D bow for sure.

Good job Mike

Thats a bummer Mike. I had an osage flat grain do the same for me, on BOTH limbs!!  Luckily as it darkened up, it just looks like a dark streak.

Still a good lookin bow and bet it doesn't hinder shootin a bit!
