Title: wood flooring for lams in limbs question
Post by: Bradford on February 08, 2012, 02:56:00 PM
I work at a flooring store and just got 2 boards of tiger strand bamboo.  was wondering if this works good in the lams for limbs.  I read that stranded bamboo makes for a fast bow?

Thanks

I believe some one on here just a couple weeks ago had a post about using bamboo flooring for tapers and parales and that's all they used

We've been using the verticle lam flooring. It's the only flooring I've seen that the bamboo runs uninterupted the lenght of the board. The horizontal has joints in it lenghtwise. I hav'nt seen any strand bamboo in a bow yet. Isn't it made from shredded bamboo?

I used woven strand bamboo on one bow and I won't recomend it. It keeps lifting tiny slivers, even through the finish.

It's not shredded.. but it's like string cheese.. peeled then glued together.  So it is really hard stuff.

We sell a verticle bamboo.. a horizontal bamboo and the stranded bamboo.  The stranded does run verticle.. so that's why I thought it would work good.

I am going to cut one up and grind it down to about .060 and put it thru the test.  Just curious if anyone has used any.  This will be in a fiberglass sandwich.. just wondering if performance would be good.

Braford.........

I think you will be fine using it for a glass lam bow. Let us know how the performance works out. I have always used the verticle bamboo flooring for lams, this will be interesting.

Will do.  Yeah.. I did a search and read some post on the stranded stuff.. your right, under glass sounds like it should do well.  I will know more after I cut and sand it down.. I will weigh both a maple lam and the bamboo and give it some stress test.

I will update this thread when I am done.

I bought a box of the solid strand bamboo flooring and have used it in longbows and 3 pcs recurves and i love it,not done any test per say but the way it is stranded seems to be more solid and it actually sands nice and smooth. not planning on changing back to vertical boo. only problem ive seen is that it is a little higher in price

I am lucky that way... I got mine for free.. My boss is an avid hunter and I am building him a bow.. so the bamboo was more than free then..lol.

Glad you like it.  I just got back in from the shed and sliced and diced it.. then ground it down to .050.  I love how it springs back.... seems like it is going to be a great core.

the vertical boo is better for mass weight the chip stuff has lots of glue resin that holds it all together I have seen one bow made from this and the boyer didnt like it but it did hold together. It also looked good.

Well.. I am not sure about the stranded.  I milled it up and then weighed it..

Here is a maple lam

So there is more weight to the bamboo.  I will say it sure feels "spring-ee-er"..LOL.  But from everything I have read, seams like it is all about weight.

I might put these in another bow, but stick to maple for the bow I am building this time.

I actually use the horizontal and have yet to have a failure. However, next time I need to buy some I'll also switch to vertical
