Looking to get a Dark Black bow built which Solid wood is the most Dark, Black Ebony, or are there other solid woods ??
I like Wenge. Not as Black as Ebony but still dark. Makes a nice riser IMO.
Try African Blackwood. It's related to the rosewood family and is darker than ebony. It's also heavy and hard to work.
Dave.
African Blackwood you say . sounds very interesting Haveing Jack Kempf build me a Raven and of coarse a Raven is Black so yes where can I get some of this wood as I have a wile before Jack starts my bow are ther any pics of this wood ,, Thanks Gordon
Gordon, I live in Cambridge, Ontario so I may not be much help to you. There is a wood supplier just up the street from me called A&M Wood Specialty (www.forloversofwood.com). I just checked their website and it shows they carry Blackwood. It comes in fairly small pieces and I'm not sure whether it's priced by the foot, by the pound or by the piece. It also appears to have a lot of whitish sapwood in it, so if you order any, ask them to select the darkest.
There is also a supplier in west Toronto called Oliver Lumber (www.oliverlumber.com). Their website doesn't show much, but it may be worthwhile to ask, as they tend to have better prices.
Good luck with your search.
Dave.
I like the wenge for the riser too.
Shawn
Dave thanks for the tip ,, I will try a call and see how large a piece I can find , as for wenge I allready have a 58" Kwyk Styk with wenge and zebra wood, it's dark brown I am really trying to find a glossy deep black piece of solid wood, mabe I will get lucky and find the perfect piece ,, Don't really want Dymond wood , mabe phenolic ?
Try some east indian rosewood. It turns out really dark after sealed.Nice wood to work with and it is solid.
