Title: Locust Jackpot
Post by: Blackie76 on November 12, 2011, 01:48:00 PM
My neighbor just took down a 70+ year old locust tree.  I managed to grab some good pieces.  Figured you folks could appreciate a couple of pics.  I didn't get the main trunk, but I gotta wonder how many staves I could have gotten out of it.

Nice find there Eric. Always great to get this stuff for free. Where are you in NY. If youare close enough I'll swap you a Cherry stave for one of those Locust ones, if you want.  :)

Eric, I was going to make a similar offer to razorback, or maybe just beg for one.

I think i'm too far north to find much locust here. I'm up on the southern edge of Tug Hill Plateau.

I'm on Long Island.  Unfortunately as I said above, I didn't get much.  All of the long pieces were gone by the time I got home from work.  I was only able to get a few thick pieces that will probably yield 3 or 4 risers each once they've been split.

Thats a bummer. From a good sized tree like that. Some people have no respect for good bow wood. I once had a large oak removed from our front yard. I was at work and asked the neighbor to ake sure they left me 2 sections 6" long from the bottom of the tree. Lovely straight and clean. I explained exactly what I wanted and he said no worries. I come home and the last 12' of the tree was nicely left by the edge of my drive, cut into 18" sections ready for splitting into firewood. Funny thing is we didn't have a fire place so I ended up giving it to the neighbour, hmmm makes you think.
