Title: Bow Scale
Post by: Gapmaster on February 21, 2008, 03:58:00 PM
I can't seem to find my bow scale. I built a new shop and must have misplaced it. What do all  the rest of you guys use to scale your bow weight? I'm looking for an affordable alternative to the last expensive scale I lost. Gapmaster

Hey FXE, that fish scale idea sounds pretty good. I never thought of that before. I will go to wal-mart and take a look and see what they have. Thanks, Gapmaster

In a pinch you can use your bathroom scale.  Best to use a blunt arrow.  Mark whaterer draw length you want on the arrow, nock it on the bow and put it on the scale and push downward until you reach the mark.  Read the scale.  QED!

Gapmaster.  I still use a tillering stick when making bows (I just can't stand the tree) and I use a bathroom scale in conjunction with that to achieve poundage.  You probably already have the scale and, like Orion says, use a blunt arrow and you've got it.

Gapmaster,I checked mine by a friends and it was only off 2 pounds at 45.I was trying to build a board bow on the cheap.Have been using it a year now, so it was well worth the money.

I have a 100# Hanson hanging on the wall with a marked scale behind it.. Also use a small block and tackle to control the draw a bit more. I believe I bought the scale from McMaster Carr for about $40, maybe five years ago. If you are not familiar with McMaster Carr, they do sell over the internet. Just checked, it's listed as a "Spring Scale" $43.00
