Title: Can a laminated glass bow be retillered?
Post by: limbshaker on September 16, 2011, 12:44:00 AM
I figured I'd ask here since a bowyer may have a good answer to my dumb question... Can a production glass bow (in this case an old Kodiak Magnum) be retillered to shoot better for 3 under? I shoot this bow well, but it's kinda loud unless I shoot split fingered which I'm awful at. I know the Bow Hospital can reduce weight, but would it be feasible to just reduce some from the bottom limb to reach positive tiller? I may try it myself anyways, so if you skilled glass bow gurus have any advice on going about it I'm all ears    :D  I'll probably ruin it, but I'll promise to post pics so at least it's entertaining

Yes. You can do it by sanding the glass the full length of the limb with a flat block. 120 grit. From fade to tip strokes. Check often. Start with the belly glass   (easier)Probably wont take much to get there.

You will probably not gain much.  Your nock set will move, but the reality is that three under will always be louder.

Yes, you can retiller the bow. But by making the bottom limb weaker, you also reduce the weight. You can adjust the tiller, but the limbs will probably get out of balance weight wise. So you win on one side but you'll loose on the other.

Swiss how you figure the limbs will get out of balance weight wise? Yeah you might losse a couple of Lbs. draw> But if you sand the glass evenly You should be fine.

I'm curious about your thoughts on that as well Swiss?

Marty is right on the money though. 3 under is still going to be louder regarless. if it shoots good for you i wouldn't bother with it myself.

i'd say just put a little mole skin on the belly side of the limb tips where you your string is making contact, add some whiskers to the string, and shoot as high a brace as you can live with.

uh... well... i suppose you could always switch to split finger too.

To get an neutral tiller you have to sand off some glass on the lower limb to make it weaker. On a recurve sometimes it can be pretty difficult to loose only a few lbs, so maybe you even have to make the lower limb a bit narrower to get the job done. Therefore the lower limb will be lighter because you sanded off some material. IMHO perfect tiller is not only a question of timing but also of balance mass wise. If one limb is heavier than the other then the bow will not shoot quiet and probably have some handshock.
