Title: Hickory backing
Post by: Cuban Missile on August 24, 2011, 04:49:00 PM
Does any one know of a store where I could find hickory suitable for backing... like Menards or something like that?  I don't want to have to wait for shipping but I will if I have to.

Cuban Missile, I've purchased boards at Menards that I sawed into backing strips.  You just have to pick through the boards to find maybe one that is suitable.

Yeah I went by there the other day and the grain in the boards thats I found were everything but straight.  Thats why I ask...  I'll keep driving around and looking.  Thanks though Ranger!  I just need something to back this "Action" Boo that I have.

Yeah CM.  I check every time I go to Menards even if I don't need any.  It's cheap when you find a good board but it might take a few trips.  The straightest grain I have found was a 1" X 2" 6'.   If you have a Fleet Farm nearby they have lumber too and may have some hickory.  I found a nice grained wide board there once too!
