Title: First self bow....Here goes nothing!
Post by: wiskietango on June 21, 2011, 11:12:00 PM
Hey guys,

I got this log I am currently working with. I cut it down and split it the other day and now its
debarked and sealed.

I was wondering how everyone else handles all the splintering from when the log was split? Any tips or tricks anyone would like to share?

And while I am at it, I would like to confirm a hunch........can anyone identify the wood?

Kinda looks like elm to me? Not sure, got any pics of the bark and leaves?
Just use your draw knife to clean the stringies off best you can and seal up the back and ends. The stringies will come off better after it's dried more.

I would also split that half again into 2 quarters, you don't need a full half to make a nice bow out of and you can double your staves.

Good luck.
