Workin on a new TD design as promised(finally)
Want to keep the sweet shootin characteristics of my 1-pc d/r bow,so I started with the same basic shape.
Here is what I have so far:
16" riser
29" limb +/- for a 64" bow
8.25 simple wedge(.375" to 0" in 8.25")
14* limb pads
And a couple pics....

The other bow is a 60" d/r
Any and all ideas , critique, or thoughts welcomed..... :)

Kenny looks like a winner to me. Looks like a good deal of thought went into the design. I really prefer the takedowns, don't really know why rarely ever take them apart and only have one bow with two sets of limbs. Go figure.
-
I guess it's ok:)
-
Jess, I've been thinkin on a long time. Running a track hoe, you have lotsa time to think...
C'mon Roy, you know ya want one o these newfangled glass-powered bows! :D
-
Ya I guess, well maybe, geeze I dunno:)
-
:saywhat: :D
-
Looks nice Kenny- after seeing what p-lams did for the one piece I would probably go with a longer wedge- 10.25" or so.
-
Excellent idea Dave, I thought a little about that. The wedges at 8.25 will be 2" farther out than the riser fades from center now. Do you think more would be better?
Thanks!
kenny

Looking good Kenny!

Based off that info-I would start with the 8.25. You may very well nail it on the first try-if not you have a good excuse to experiment ;)
-
sounds great! looks like it'll be a winner for you
-
I don't know much about take down bows, never built one. But this one looks sweet and might change that. I'm sure you will come up with something very nice.

-
Mount the limbs on the back of the riser so you can keep the forward handle performance you already have.
-
Hey Kenny,
Looks great!!! What you can do, is ship the first prototype to me for a "test drive"!!! :bigsmyl:
for interest sake, why didn't you go for a 2pc take down with Locket Socket or Bow Bolt?
-
Thanks guys, I may try a rearmounted limb a little later and also a bowbolt model.
-
Looks like winner Kenny
-
I wish I knew what the hell this all meant so I can have some sort of input:
{ 8.25 simple wedge(.375" to 0" in 8.25") }
But I don't, so I'll just say that I still LOVE that R/D one piece.
Correct me if i'm wrong, but if you add 2 limbs at 29" each, to a 16" riser, you get a 74" bow? Maybe that 10" limb pad jargon has something to do with it being 64"? Is it you subtract 5" for each limb pad?
Either way, I still think you need an apprentice, and that apprentice should be ME! muhahahaha jk. But I would take the internship if available :)
-
I still dunno:)

Don't know what?

We was joking around earlier Red Hill...
-
i like it, and can't wait to see the progress
-
i don't know a lot about them other than i realy like the short risers better than the longer one's and yea kenny i cant wait to see what you come up with i like all the bows i have seen of yours so far so im excited for you in this adventure
-
Looks good Kenny Go with it!
-
I just glued up a limb, other one in a few hours. Almost built a long form and glued up both end to end, then sawed in center, but wasn't sure how that would work out and I had a short scrap of plywood to use for the form anyways.
I have a feeling it is gonna be too stout, but my calcs say not. We shall see, maybe tomorrow...
Guess since its a TD, I could make a riser about 36" long for it!
-
Good luck on hitting your weight Kenny. The first one is a guess at best. I had a form once for gluing both limbs at one time, kinda like a one piece without the riser. It worked well but went back to the shorter form anyway.
-
I think it's gonna be another winner! Can't wait to see more progress.

That is a 14(edited) degree pad, but you have it anyways, the limbs and riser overlap to hopefully make a 64"! :saywhat:

Any ideas or thoughts appreciated!
Weight came in at 49@28 first pull, should finish out around 43-45
Stack was .320, takes .360 on the one-pc 64" with the superlam(has powerlam and tipwedge builtin), I'll have to chrono it later and see what .040 less does!
Gotta build a 10 strand d-97 first.
-
Looks good to me!
-
Looks good I bet she is a sweet shooter.
-
Thanks fellas, see any changes I need to make?
-
Looks like a real fine bow Kenny.
-
Looks like it is bending nicely- good wag on the stack, that's a good weight to shoot.
-
-
Boy, that tiller profile is beautiful. Very nice work. Promising design!
-
I guess it's ok, I dunno though:)
-
Thanks guys, gotta make a string and get the tip overlays on before I chrono it.
Roy, I'm gonna have to make a split tree bow,eh? :D
-
She looks great Kenny! And thanks for the info. Looking forward to the finished result. 45# bows are the best all around weight IMO.
-
I can send you my address....you know...for a "second opinion" type of thing... :)
-
Sweet!
-
Kenny,
That is brilliant, I really love it. If you wanna make one about 50#@27, you could ship it to England. :D
I would love a set of plans aswell!
Thanks for sharing it with us.
Pete
-
Thanks guys!
I don't sell any bows, just donate to good causes. Missed having one for ST Judes this year, may have to fancy one up for next year!
The plans I will sell, but only after finishing a couple and tweaking the design. So a few months out yet! :)
-
Kenny - You know I'm more into simple Hill style longbows, but that one is a real eye-catcher. That risr is very nicely shaped
-
I misread my speed square, the limb pad angles are 14 instead of 10.
Don't know how that happened! :knothead:
-
Looks good Kenny. Great Job
-
Lets bring this back up.
Waiting to see what GREAT product Kenny has in the end.
-
Kenny,
I too am curious as to why you decided to go to a 3 pc. takedown? Based on your comment that you were trying to achieve "similar shooting results of your 1 pc r/d design" I would think that the added mass in the riser needed for a 3 pc. and the difference of reflex that you have in your takedown limbs made for a rather different feeling / shooting bow. Maybe not speed wise, but in the way the shot feels. It's a nice looking full-draw bow in my opinion, almost looks to me like a take-down longbow...
-
'cos we all been begging kenny for a 3 piece- for those of us who like a 3 piece.
and good man has risen to the occaision.
its gonna be a bit different for sure- but the same thoughts and ideas have gone into it as his i piece- and they have a mighty fine rep.
one more arrow in his fine quiver( sorry!!!)
-
Yep, def a TD longbow, just tryin to get a sweetshootin bow.
Here are the chrono results. Think it would gain a bit by adding some stack and narrowing the limbs down a little more. Wanted to keep this one up over 40-45 for now.
NOTE- this is with a shooting machine and a mechanical release, fingers will be 4-5 fps less for most folks.
First the 628 grain CX 250 w/250 up front...
46 @ 28 -- 13.65 gpi -- 156 fps
48.5 @ 29- 12.95 gpi -- 163 fps
51 @ 30 -- 12.31 gpi -- 169 fps
53.5 @ 31- 11.74 gpi -- 177 fps
56 @ 32 -- 11.21 gpi -- 184 fps
Notice she stacks a bit after 31"
Now the 395 grain CX 150 w 145(I think) up front
46 @ 28 -- 8.59 gpi -- 188 fps
48.5 @ 29- 8.14 gpi -- 195 fps
51 @ 30 -- 7.75 gpi -- 207 fps
53.5 @ 31- 7.38 gpi -- 211 fps
Ran out of arra length! :knothead:
-
Very nice Kenny-especially for the first one off the form. Looks like you maintained that nice bend in the limbs like the one piece too.
-
Lookin' good Kenny - when are your plans going to be ready?!!
-
Great numbers bro! Looks like the makings of a screamer!
-
Nice job Kenny. The braced profile looks nearly identical to the original one piece.
-
awesome kenny- i cant wait to build one.
THANK YOU!!!!
-
Thanks guys, I gotta build a couple more and shoot this one a bunch before I can let any templates out.
I love the way it shoots.
-
Cool Kenny! I'm right in the middle of building one that's very similar. Looking to go for 56" to 60" with a very similar design. So hope mine turns out as nice.
-
My thoughts are thats a nice design...I'll PM my address for the dollar. :^)
-
Awesome as usual!

-
That finished up nicely Kenny! Does it shoot as good as it looks?
-
Thats one fine looking bow Kenny
Tracy
-
Thanks guys, I aint sure I like the riser shape, too busy almost, but there is only so many ways to make a TD look! LOL
Yeah, I had my huntin bow picked out for this year, but this one is neck and neck and gaining. Its only 45# but still shoots my 625 grain arrows quite well at my huntin ranges.
Tracy, are you gettin along better, gonna be ready to arrow a KS buck?
-
Oh yeah, I black sharpied those phenolic tips! I thought it worked quite well!
-
Should be good to go by then Kenny, Just in case I'm working a lighter weight hunting bow right now if I need it.
A couple more weeks and I will start trying to shoot some really light weight kids bows I made. :bigsmyl:

Wishin ya the best bud!!

pretty dang sweet!
-
Too cool!
-
WOW!
I can only give my admiration for your talent! I like the bow.Maxx
-
Kenny,
That looks really nice. With 14 degree limb pads I think you could shorten it to 62" and still get a smooth 30" draw. I find T/D longbow risers to be the most difficult ones to shape. I tried for years to find a riser style that I liked, finally I gave up and made a copy of a Pronghorn. I need to order a template when they are ready, I think your design is better than the one I'm building.
-
Great job, Kenny ! That is for sure a fine looking bow. I like the shape of the riser. Actually I like everything about that bow.
----------
Andy
-
Thanks guys!
Ummm Greg, I think they are closer to 14 degree. My speed square led me astray I beleive, I ordered a new steel protractor to be sure tho.
-
Nice, you'd think you did this for a livin' or somethin'!
Sharp bow, Kenny.
Stan

"Notice the advantage the long armed knuckledraggers have "
You talking bout me? :saywhat:
Anyhow, I think it looks nice. Now can I have my dollar? Please :bigsmyl:
CTT
PS, What is the Brace hight?
-
She turned out nice Kenny!
-
Red,some days I wish I did it for a livin!! LOL
C'mon Chuck, I already owe Glunt a dollar and I only budgeted $1.00 for thoughts. :D
Oh, and I am also a knuckle dragger, cept I just have legs that are too short!
Thanks Galen!
-
Looks great! A buddy just laid claim to "my" bow I was finishing up to use this fall. Looks like it's me who will be sending some dollars your way Kenny so I can build another'n.
-
Beautiful bow. It sounds like she shoots as good as she looks.
