Title: First BBI questions
Post by: alex b on March 06, 2011, 09:15:00 PM
Just ordered the materials to make a bamboo backed ipe bow. I've made some selfbows but never attempted any sort of backing.

What glue should I use to glue the bamboo and handle?
any tips on getting a good glue line and application?

How should I taper the bamboo with only handtools?
plane?

I am sure I will have more questions as I continue

thanks
alex

What kind of poundage are you looking for?  With ipe, 1" will suffice for most weights.  I've had good luck with both urac and titebond III, urac is better but more expensive and more complicated.  I've done several by wrapping them with inner tube tires cut into big rubber bands.  That method gives some excellent glue lines.  The handle gets glued separately with clamps.

I apply it with my finger.
