Title: IPE
Post by: rimes on February 16, 2011, 10:46:00 PM
I have started to do some initial looking around for IPE, and I am having a hard time coming up with anyone local who carries it. For some reason I was under the impression that it was a fairly common wood to carry for decking materials. So far the only place I have found that can get it has to special order it. Does anyone have suggestions on where to look for it locally other than the obvious places? Thanks

Kris

If theres a lumberyard close to you that carries wood for cabinet makers like hickory, maple, cherry, they should have some ipe or some of the other tropical woods, thats where Ive found it. If not there you might try flooring stores.

I was lucky to find a wholesaler/distributor that would sell a few boards to me and let me pick thur the inventory. $6 B/F.  If you are in a large city check the phone book for distritutors in your area also do an internet search for exotic woods local.

The best I have found so far is $7 a linear foot for 2 by 6 plus freight because it is special order, so no looking through for a good piece.

Ipe is used for wood decks. Try that locally. Where in FL are you?

I get mine from a wood flooring shop.  It comes T&G and with slats on the bottom.  But after I trim those off, its 5/8".

I searched and ended up buying from a place in NY. The shipping to Mo. was almost $20.00.
It was a good looking board but there is two areas with a knot that I'll loose some on. It was &6.55
per linear foot for the 2x6.

My next order I may ask if they can pick out a clear board.

Sawmills, lumberyards, building supply etc. especially in more affluent areas where Ipe decking is commonly sold. I recently bought an Ipe 2" x 4" x 8' board for like $45. It's not cheap but thats alot of bows, especially if we're talking tri-lams.

IPE in Florida is easy. Used on high end decks.
