Hello, all!
I know this is a really personal and variable question, but I thought I'd post it anyway. I'm trading an osage self-bow for some trumpet lessons, but the bow is for my professor's friend who is 6'3" tall. My prof doesn't know his friend's draw length and doesn't want to blow the surprise by asking. I've been making bows for many years, but after all this I have to ask the newbie question, "What would be a safe draw length to shoot for?" :knothead:
Thanks for bearing with me on this one!

His draw should be 29 1/4"s for a 6'3" height (approx)

Trux,
I'm just a tick over 6' and my draw length is about 29 1/4". How did you come up with that number, is there a chart/graph that gives ball park figures for this stuff. My wing span is the same as my height and I anchor at the corner of my mouth. I have never been able to guess what draw length an individual has.
John,
If it was me, I would tiller a bow to 30". That should give you plenty of leeway for a tall shoter. Not many have much of a draw length past that and if he has shorter the bow will still perform well. Taller shooters will hopefully chime in.

I'm a touch under 6'4" and draw 28" when I anchor at the corner of my mouth...wingspan is same as height, FWIW.
-
Just make it real heavy that will shorten his draw length. Sorry I just couldn't resist be a s wiseguy.

Razorback- I figured the draw length based off of an average (.39 x height = draw length)based off of my height and draw length- it's not a perfect "fits all" but will get you close- your height and draw length= .40625. I would error on the high side to be safe.

I'm 6" tall (well before all my back surgeries) but my wingspan is 6'5 1/2". If I go by Ht x .39 my draw is 28, but I draw about 30.75"( yeah-it's a pain to buy shirts). I was taught to go by wingspan divided by 2.5, which for me is just about right on the mark.

I'm 6'3" tall and draw 30". (30-1/2" BOP)

That's a GREAT idea, Jess!!! I think that's the only sure way of making this bow. I'll also make the string angle 90degrees so it stacks like crazy so he won't want to draw it any further. That's hilarious. Thanks for all the input on this. I'll go ahead and make it for a 30" draw-lenght and make it a tad longer or wider than I would normally. With skinny tips, it shouldn't be bad with hand shock. He just won't be able to hunt out of a blind with it!

trux im 6 7 i draw a honest 28 to the corner of my mouth i think u better get the tape and measure the guy iv seen way too many smaller than me keep in mind lot s the first timers shot a compounded and pull em to their ear brock

I'm 6'2" and draw about 30 1/2. I know a guy who is my height and draws 31 1/2.
I'd go with the wing span formula since it takes into account the width of the shooters chest. That's where my friend picks up his draw length. His arms are not especially long but the wing span is pretty wide.

I'm 6'2" and drow longbows(low wrist) at around 29 and recurves around an inch longer!!

im 6'2" and draw 31".

I am 6'1" and draw 30" to 31" depending on my stance. My wingspan is 6'5".
