Title: Clubs in South Dakota
Post by: ewarshaw on July 04, 2007, 12:20:00 PM
Hey Folks,

Just found this website which is very cool.  I have been thinking about the switch from compound to traditional and this is helping me decide.
Are there any clubs that you know of in western SD (Rapid City or Black Hills)?
Thanks and have a great day.

Elliott

Thinking of swithcing over, if you live close to Hot Spring South Dakota, The North American Longbow Safari is being held there this year. All the guys and gals that shoot longbows will be there you can see it in all it's glory, everyone thats anyone will be there.  :campfire:

Contact "bohuntr" (aka Dan Fox) on this site. He is here often and could be a good source of info for you, as he lives and is involved with various organizations in S.D.

Hey Elliot, while I live in the eastern part of SD I know there are a good number of traditional bowhunters/shooters out in your area. My guess is that if the longbow safari is being held in Hot Springs this year that has something to do with either Jim Dahlburg and/ or Lon Sharp both of whom live in the Hot Springs area and both of whom are avid traditional hunters/shooters. If you are looking for a contact futher north you could try Chad Scholten who lives in either Spearfish or Sturgis or try Dave Utter who lives in the Rapid City area. You can also find info on the website for our state bowhunters organization whose address is  www.sdbi.net (http://www.sdbi.net)  I believe. If that address is incorrect just do a search for sdbi and you will get there. If you are interested we are going to have our state bowhunters convention here in my hometown of Yankton this coming March 7th and 8th. Fred Eichler is our featured speaker and there will be all kinds of other interesting speakers , plus vendors (including Tim Finley of Kota traditional bows), an auction, and raffles (including double bull blind(s), Swarovzski binos, a Kota bow and a turkey hunt guided personally by Fred Eichler). Welcome to SD!!!

Thanks for the info.  I originally posted this last July, and I have since dove in with both feet.  I bought a Bear Grizzly and hunted with it all last season.  I learned alot (the hard way) and even had a few shots (yes, I missed them all).
I learned that it's easy to be on target when you shoot the same distance every day at the range, but not so when you're ground hunting.
I learned that, unlike my old compound (which I don't use anymore), you don't draw back and wait for the deer to reach the shooting lane unless you want to drive home cursing at yourself for being so stupid.
I learned more about deer behavior in 3 months hunting with a recurve than 4 years hunting with a rifle.
And most of all, I learned to love archery like I did when I was a kid.
I am officially hooked.
Thanks.

If you're interested in NALS, let me know and I'll see if I can get a brochure sent to you.  Jim Dahlberg is doing the organizing this year.

I hunted SD two years ago and hope to try again this year.  Scared one muley right out of his bed.

Elliott:
Trad night at Black Hills Archery is Wed nights...have you been going to them?
I missed last week and will miss this week because my son is taking Hunter Ed.
Anyway, there's a couple of us that shoot Traditional...we need to get together for a chipmunk shoot sometime!

I'm south of you in Chadron, NE. I think there are quite a few trad shooters in the Hot Springs area.
