First off, a huge thank you to 4est Trekker for the fantastic buildalong I followed, as well as the rest of the community for support and knowledge. Being that this is my senior year in high school, I was able to take a "fun" class in between calculus and physics: woodshop. My first project was to make a bow, which was questionable at best, given my school's ridiculously strict policies. A fun note though, was that during the final stages of making the bow (it was completely tillered to my liking), the superintendent was visiting the class, looking at projects and what kids were building. I got nothing but support from him! He asked if I hunt, and I said that I don't but I want to. But, being a northern suburb of Chicago, there aren't many places to hunt near here and I don't know anyone that hunts that could teach me. Either way, he thought it was pretty neat, so I guess that's a green light for bow number two which is sure to be on the way.
Details:
68" long red oak with reflex tips
67" NTN,
Made a 64" black/blue string with yarn string silencers,
mahogany and red oak riser
leather cord handle wrap, leather arrow rest
2.5" maximum width at riser, tapering to 1/2" wide at the tips
Purple heart nock overlays
Haven't measured set yet but it took some.
Haven't measured draw weight with an accurate scale yet, but it's roughly 50# @ 28"

First day shooting it, got a decent grouping for it being my first experience with longbows in a while. I'm used to the white tail II compound I have, but this one is more fun to shoot (probably because I built it myself!) Roughly 13 to 15 yards.
If you want, I have more pictures of the build that I can post.
Any comments, suggestions, etc. are welcome. Thanks, hope you like it

Great job on that bow John!

nice job. I'm glad your school allowed it to happen. It wouldn't have been possible at my old school.

Fine Job on a fine bow.
4est's buildalong is what got me understanding wood bows. My first wasa a red oak board bow it is pretty much done (it shoots but needs some fine tweeking and a finish put on it.
I was very inpatient on geting an osage bow done to hunt with and moved on to that and finished it. I guess I need to finish up the baord bow and shoot it for awhile.
Welcome to a great addiction and you are among some of the finest company.

Mr. Lipinski,
I love your bow. I too built one of these following the instructions. I live in Round Lake IL and have been bowhunting for a few years. If you'd like I'll p.m. you my phone number and you can pick my brain as to questions regarding bowhunting. I can also give you some places to go, public, but they're places you can hunt. And this way I won't be the only one carrying a stickbow. You should see the looks! Nice job on the bow and good luck with number #2.

Beautiful bow, John! You may be surprised at the number of people who may be supportive of your efforts. I hope you find an area to hunt in soon. You'll really enjoy shooting in a hunting environment.
Really a great job!

John - nice first bow! I too live in Chicago (south side by Museum of Science and Industry). I don't hunt either, but maybe someday. I need to get a heck of a lot more accurate before I head out to the woods. If you're looking for a place to shoot, Archery Custom Shop in Forest Park on Madison near Harlem is a good place to go and it's pretty inexpensive for an hours worth of shooting. I go there and shoot with some other sorta stick bow guys occasionally on Wednesday nights. I say sorta because they all shoot glass bows and I'm the only all-wood stickbow guy.

Finally got around to getting a scale on this. Measures exactly 50# @ 28" after being shot in.
It has a brace height of 7.5"
I also got a name for it: the "Peregrine" (as in, the peregrine falcon)

It's still shooting great and shows no signs of stopping. Thanks for everyone's help. I'm already started on bow number two!
