How do I determine where to file my nock grooves? Start at the center of the grip and go out the same distance??? Help, lol!!

I usually measure 3/4" to 1" down from the tip if the limb for the string groove.

From the 3/4" mark on the back edge of the bow cut the string groove at a 45deg angle, angling down towards the belly. Do not cut across the back of the bow unless you use an overlay.
i ended up doing pin nocks on the red oak that split , and there was no overlay , so that might be why it split (and it was horrible wood to boot)...
i tried the 45 string angle , but it just looked odd , so i went with pins...

Once you string the bow with the 45deg nocks cut you can trace the string loops to get a better fit. Pin nocks are fine but you still need to get even pressure on the string or you will run into problems.
Ok, I think I understand. 3/4 in down from the tip/end of limbs. Start there and angle groove 45 deg. towards belly of bow. Do I make the groove across the face of limb and connect the 2 side grooves? Or just have 2 grooves on the sides of the limbs. Wished i could draw it or post a pic but I couldn't figure out how to.

if youput top overlays on , you can cut into them , otherwise you want to avoid cutting into the back of the bow.
i have seen some people cut into it , but even when they do , they still reccomend not to...thats why i just did a sort of pin nock...

No im not putting overlays. This is my first selfbow. I'm sorry, I do not know what pin nocks are. Ok so the back and face of a bow are the same thing?

The back of the bow faces away from the archer and the belly faces the archer.
