I need a set of plans for building a bowyers bench. I have seen some but they are just pictures no deminsions or drgree of angle on the holding arm.
I could use the pictures to make the bench but a better set of plans would help out a lot with fewer mistakes.
Are u looking for a shaving horse type rig for self bows?
Check out the Trad Gang "How To" section. I think there are plans there or on the Primitive Archer "How To".
i was thinking of this today , as i am not currently in my own personal residence where i could bolt things to workbenches , or make a big tillering tree area on the perfect walls , but i could put something together that could easily be packed for moving , or whatever. im going to play around in sketchup , if all else fails , ill draw something or worst comes to worst mapaint....
what i was thinking anyways , is taking a 4x4 or two 4x4's , lagging them together , and building an adjustable square sliding piece , that would slide over the end , and have either a big platform or something to mount a vice on , adjustable in length via pegs , and rotatble perhaps , the legs i was thinking something like another piece of 4x4 , and a door hinge , but have the end of the 4x4 hang over a bit from the hinge , so that when opened , it would but up against the back of the two lagged together , limiting the travel...
of course there would have to be a seat , and i suppose it may be easier to have the seat moveable , instead of the mounting platform , which now that i think about it , it could be slid through the lagged bits , and held ...oh hell , paint here i come...
ok , heres what i came up with , after looking at the finished drawing , i notice that the folding capability of the leg is kind of moot , as if they were at an angle like that , they wouldnt lay flat... so...im open to ideas , but to me , its not a dealbreaker...it would still offer stability , and make it a little easier to move , through doorways or into and out of cars , whatever , but it should all be self explanatory .
i show it with a raised post , that you could attach a vice to , or come up with your own way to mount something , but i was thinking of cutting and extra vertical post that would be a little taller than a sitting position , and notches to be used as a tillering stick...
heres the artwork...

I used plastic saw horse leg brackets from Lowe's to attach the legs to my bow bench. I used 2x8(one 10') for the bench and 2x4(one 8') for the legs. The knucklehead, arm and foot trettle were made with hardwood scraps.
I got my plans from an old Primitive Archer Magazine.
Thanks RAU that was just what I needed. I apprciate everyones help and I will start building this bench next pay check I get.
well nevermind then , that looks perfect already , i remembered seeing one of those , but i didnt know that the clamp was foot operated ... i thought you had to get your stick in there , then move the back of the bench back , and sit on it...
needless to say i thought it would be a bit wobbly , but this makes a lot more sense...i love youtube..
