Riser block was glued up by Bodork. Kingwood w/zebra flair. Chuck Deshler donated the veneers. Kenny M donated the fiberglass.

When I had my Osprey form machined, I had him machine a jig to profile the riser back.

Slick as a whistle

I have always lined my form with 1/8" firm rubber, not only to protect the form but to allow some "give" where the tapered lams are between the riser block and the form. I get a perfect glue joint everytime.
I mark the fade outs with a template and cut them out with the bandsaw. Bodork reinforced this riser with black fiberglass. Without a carbide blade on the saw I just used a half worn out blade as I knew the FG would trash the blade. When the blade hit the fiberglass, as expected the sparks flew. Instead of cutting through the fiberglass at an angle the blade deflected and wanted to follow the edge of it. Luckily, I wasn't putting too much pressure on it and didn't ruin the riser block. It was close though. :banghead:
Trashed blade.

Fade outs feathered, ready for epoxy. Freezer paper protects the workbench.

Cheap electrical tape (60 cents per roll) hold everything in place until pressure is applied. 65 psi

Slack belt works well for rounding edges.
Peeling the tape off is one of the sweet rewards for working with nice veneers.

Jig for filing nock grooves.

Lastly, just for fun. This is the mason putting a course of block for the 12 x 22" addition onto my shop. Soon I will have room for a separate spray booth. :bigsmyl:

The bow will be mailed out to Apex Predator tomorrow for the completion. CHAD wanted a 60" bow, 53-55#. It is at 54.5# @ 28" now. With final sanding it should hit the mark at 54# dead nuts.
Chad
What length string will it take Chad?....Thats going to be a nice addition to the shop!
Very nice job Chad!
I have that same radio in my shop! Lot more battered!!LOL
Looks like I need to get to work on the quiver!
CHAD, if you see this, give me a call. I need your phone number. Thanks, Chad
I like that jig for cutting nock groves. You can bet I'll be fabricating one for myself.
Brad, 58" string. Chad
You got it. Will be made tonight. Thanks
Bow was mailed to Apex Friday---look for it Monday. Chad
I'll keep an eye out for her.
I just got back from camping and jumped online to see if Chad had posted the build along and WOW this bow is going to look great. Thanks everyone for your time and supplies i do appreciate it.
Chad
Since I'm in my picture taking mode, here is a couple other pictures.
Taken outside my shop, in the yard. Two hens and 13 youngins.

I work by myself so much in the shop it gets lonely at times, so I created "Wilson" to keep me company. :)

Allright guys, it's my turn now. First thing was preparing some overlays. I thought zebra and black glass was the obvious choice! Here is the riser, the pieces laid out, and then glued on.

I also talked to Chad and got some idea of what he wanted for grip shape. Seems he likes this one, so I think I have enough riser to work this grip without adding overlays to the belly. I was dreading the overlays, so I am relieved!

Looking good Marty.
That's gonna be a good one Chad!! Lookin awesome guys!
Don
Here are the overlays starting to blend. Worked a while on the tips this morning. I've got company coming in today to hunt the weekend, so I probably won't get any more done until Monday. Bear with me Chad!

Looking good!!!!!
Did you get the silencers Marty? When you put them on wrap them real tight, holding the yarn back as you wrap so that you can see the edge of the ribbon, then make the next wrap over the edge of the ribbon of the preceding wrap. If you wrap them this way they will be real tight and compact, making a neat little puffball. does that make sense? I've been meaning to make a video of it, i suppose i should finally do it.
I got them! They look very professional, and should compliment the bow well.
Got the sight window cut this morning. Still have to radius the shelf, and then it's grip shaping. Where is that string?
I told you CHAD was a LEFTY, right???
Just kidding. It looks great. The tips look awesome. Chad
You are MEAN Chad.
FUNNY but MEAN.
(Or does that mean it will be a forward handled string follow bow?)
I've been waiting to see how those desert camo lams would accent the zebrawood once the riser was shaped a bit. I think it's going to look neat! I was hoping they would add a little subtle color, just enough to make you look twice. Great job guys! This has been fun to watch. Mike
Bodork, I think the desert como will look great.I have never seen it used as an accent before. It gives it a inlay look.
CHAD
Oh, so Mike, there is a method to this madness afterall? I like the camo lam accents.
Mike did an outstanding job on building this riser! The glue lines are perfect. Chad's lay-up was flawless as well. I sure hope I can finish her as well. I did some grip shaping this morning. Starting to look like a bow now! I'll get some more photos up.
Here we go! Final sanding ahead!

Should this one have some kind of commemorative markings on her? Something like St Judes Bow? Or maybe something else?
BEAUTIFUL BOW FELLAS!! WOW   , The Alcohol Brought the Grain and Colors Right Out of that Riser!! Question: It was said Before that Firm 1/8 Rubber was added to the LayUp, I cant See It. Am I Blind or is it Hidden, if either of My Options are Correct, Can You Show Me Where the Rubber IS?? Much Appreciated from a Very Rookie Bowyer!! :archer:
I'm sure the rubber was used as a cushion against the outside of the glass during lay-up. It's definitely not in the completed bow.
Bows lookin good guys.Maybe one of these days i can get my form up to par and get some better glue lines
The form itself is lined with rubber. The rubber just stays on the form to protect the form and make everything more forgiving.
Marty, whatever CHAD wants written on the bow would be fine. Chad
That's looking good! After studying the riser and stripes with the alcohol, I kind of wish I would have put the black glass on both sides of the actionwood. Of course, Chad and Marty wish I would have used almost anything except glass for the black accent. Sorry guys, but it was all I had and I thought the black really popped the kingwood. Mike
I shape risers by hand, so it was no trouble for me Mike. I like it just the way it is.
It,s getting close now.
Ok, I got ya now! Thanks for the Explainations!!
that bow is saaaaweeeeet. I like those wood choices alot. Great work guys.
This beauty is finished!
The last photo shows the hand crafted tab and string silencers donated by other craftsmen.

Nice finish work!!
I'm really pleased with how this whole thing turned out. I want to thank all the floks who donated time, materials and money to make this happen. I want to thank CHAD especially for putting his money and confidence in us to make a more than worthy bid for the kids. I hope you like the bow and it serves you well for many years to come. Hopefully this bow will make some meat for you this Fall. Remember, I like pictures for my website. Chad
very nice, the profile kinda reminds me of the old ben pearson i grew up shooting. great work guys.
Looks great guys.I will get a chance to put alot of arrows though her at the GLLI in August.
Chad
Chad,
Get ahold of me through PM and get me your phone # and I will get with you on the quiver for the package. I need to go pick up some leather in a few weeks and need to find out a few preferences from you.
Nice looking stick by the way!
