hi i making a limb repair to a bamboo backed epe longbow and wanted your opion on this the bamboo outer shell popped a piece or strip between the handle and first nod still atached so i super glued it back down and letting it sit for 24 hours next i thought of using spectra line wrapped around the entire affected area and coating with super glue letting set 24 hours then wrap dacron line around the affected area and coating with glue to finish and doing the other of bow to match as too look as it was intented to be this way the bow is @ 65lbs at 29" i'm wondering if i should drop wt of bow to 55lbs before doing repair as a safty to this bow or just repair and hope not to explode it thanks for your thoughts LjT
I had a simular thing happen. I used silk for one issue, and it was a pain to get on and keep from unraveling.
Next problem, I used elk sinew from back sinew. This this was the cats meow. Along with knox jellatin. I won't use serving material or silk again. Several wraps of elk back sinew will hold any bow together.
LJT, one or the other wrap will be sufficient. You don't need both. Set whichever one in super glue after wrapping. I generally use silk but sometimes use serving material. They all work fine. Sinew is another option like Big said. I usually chew the sinew before wrapping. By doing so I don't need hide glue as the sinew and saliva makes it's own glue. I usually set that with super glue or sometimes TBIII.
well i finished the repair and this how it went, first i super glued the bamboo skin that popped out then i super glued a piece of material over as a bandage both at problem and a piece other side of bow that was located same spot as it this material was from a triangle bandage in my first aid kit some very thin cotton material it almost turned clear with the super glue let dry then wrapped dacron 50 lb musky line around the entire problem plus abit on both sides as a nice finish then TB-3 coated twice over it the line almost is the same color as the bamboo and really looks great as finished bow i'm thinking of doing this on future bows just for the look of it i'll try and post a picture LjT
