Kansas City and surrounding area Trad Gang Members,
Back in August of "07" Rick A.K.A. Recurvericky wanted to organize a traditional archery club for the Olathe area, see http://tradgang.com/noncgi/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=049247
From the thread called out above, I count 21 Trad Gang members (listed below) that are interested in having a way of gathering the Kansas City and surrounding area traditional archers to meet. The problem that Rick ran up against was finding a place to shoot. I think I might be able to help with this part of the problem but there will be some details to work out. One of the main issues will be liability. Other issues will be when the group would like to shoot and how often. The place that I have to offer for shooting is my private residence and my hunting grounds. (I don't want to come off as rude) One of the things that my wife and I value very highly is our privacy but at the same time we like sharing our good fortune with others. As I stated a few months back, we have quite a bit of space for shooting indoors and out so in bad weather, high winds, rain, heat or dark we still could gather and shoot.
I think the first step would be to meet and put some faces with names and handles that we see on the Trad Gang web site. This would also give us a chance to find out what the groups expectations are and how formal or organized we want to make the group. Does everyone really want to set up a club and have a president, secretary and all the other officers that make up a formal club along with dues and responsibilities or do we want to just gather periodically as a loose knit group to shoot and create new friendships?
My thought was to meet at one of the restaurants in the Legends shopping center http://www.legendsshopping.com near Cabela's. This would be a fairly equal distance for most people to travel to and the plus side is Cabela's is close by.
Of course the key would be to find a place where 20 or 30 people can gather in one area and converse so, if someone else has a place that would work better please let me know. I know Cabela's has a sandwich restaurant that usually isn't very busy and it may be a possible place to meet. Update from my wife: Cabela's has meeting rooms in the back upstairs. They rent the rooms for $75 a day and provide breakfast, lunch and dinner menu for an extra cost. This information is being sent to me.
I know that we won't be able to accommodate everyone's schedule but I would like to gather as many people as possible to discuss this topic so please tell the group (on this thread) what time would work best for you and then we will go with a majority rule to setup a time.
Thanks for reading and please ad your comments, advice or thoughts to help get this ball rolling.
Tom

If I'm free I'll make the drive up.
Dennis
Tom,
Afternoons on the weekend would work better for me. Sounds like fun.
Chris
Let me know when and I'll try and be there. Ben
Guys, we are having a shoot, here in Marshall, Mo, on Feb 24! It is an open shoot, not totally trad, but come on over and have fun!!! Looks like KennyM and I will be shooting together, along with a couple others!!!
weekends are best for me as well
Kevin (fatman)
weeknights after 7 or weekends.
Tom, you might give Mike @ the Nocking Point a jingle...he doesn't "do" computers, but he's relatively close to the Legends, and he may be interested as well....

That would be great!
No way on weekday evenings but anytime on most weekends.
I think the open dining area out on the public would be plenty large (and like you said, it's not usually very busy) and we could all just fend for ourselves for food this first time around instead of arranging a prepaid meal. Later if this takes off that would be a nice option but for the first meeting, I'd be cautious about making fancy arrangements.
The Three Trails Archery club is having a shoot on SUNday FEbruary17th at 9am in LEE's SUMMIT. THEY ALSO ARE SERVING free CHILI WITH EACH ENTRY
I think that this would be a good time and place to gather togetherand shoot. We could also ask questions about starting a club. THese guys have been at this for quite awhile. They are a great bunch of guys who put together thiclub.I plan on being there for sure.

Dave,
I tend to agree with you about getting too carried away with the arrangements. I will stop by Cabela's within the next couple of days and talk to the restaurant manager and get some feed back from him/her about what we are wanting to do and get their input. Maybe they can arrange some tables for us to use so that we can have an area to ourselves. They will probably be more receptive if they feel we will buy some food while we use their space.

kctreeman,
The Three Rivers shoot sounds like a fun time for sure and a good place to recruit some knowledgeable people to come and talk to us at our first meeting. If you have more information about this shoot please put a link on here and I will add it to my first post.

This also sounds like a great time. Hopefully we can have our first meeting before the shoot and get a group together to come and shoot with you boys. If you have an information link for this shoot please post it for us.
Thanks for your input guys
I am the "relief" guy where I work so I may work any shift on any day but if I can make it to the meeting I'll come.
I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the guys on the list and they are a fine bunch.
Thanks for your efforts Gatekeeper.
Iam retired so just about any day or time is ok with Me.
I have a suggestion thou how about since this is the first get together for all of us, that we have the Meeting at the Platte Woods Archery Range, they have a really nice covered shelter house there, we could cook out and have a BBQ, Shoot some Archery at the range, hold our Meeting. Just a thought for the meeting for the first time.
All we need to do is contact the Missouri Conservation Dept. to reserve the site, since it is a public Archery range.
Dave Bulla is very familar with the site, He shoots there often, a couple years ago we had a Traditional get together for a FUN day......Gail Darling.....(ONE SHOT)
I second One Shot. Platte Falls would be a good choice and we could shoot on the range or shoot the walk thru course in the woods. I don't know why I didn't think of that. Good think'n Gail!!
I'm a canuck, but don't hold that against me ok.
I am coming through KC around the 26-27th of Feb with my Pinzgauer (driving it home from Milwaukee. I am coming to see a fella in KC on my way to Golden Colorado.
Anything happening around that time??? Would sure like to meet some of the people on this site.
I live in the Yukon so we don't get many people out to shoot with and most are compounders (not that there's anything wrong with that right).
I will be bringing my bow with me and was hoping to get some shooting in.
I read in the thread about Cabelas - is that the store I buy some of my online stuff at?? Sorry we are so far north we have southern lights here and we have to order most things online. We even have more bears here than people LOVE THAT. I would like to pick up a 3d target or two to bring back to the YUKON with me.
Thanks a bunch

Platte Falls is a possibility but weather conditions could vary heavily at this time of year. The way the poll is turning out right now it looks like Saturday afternoons are the best time for most people.
The only reason I picked the Cabela's location is because I thought it was fairly centrally located for people coming from all directions and we could have a place inside but, I am cool with whatever the group wants to do.
I have sent a personal message to a lot of the people on the list above and I would like to give them until Friday 2/15/08 to respond. After that I think we should set a date and time to meet.
:bigsmyl:
I stopped by Cabela's tonight and talked to the evening restaurant manager and asked about holding our meeting in their food court area and this is what he told me.
There shouldn't be any problem with us using the food court area to meet in but he can't guarantee that there will be enough space for us because it is a public area. There isn't a problem with pulling some tables together so that we can sit as a group but it will be up to us to figure out and setup the seating arrangement. We will be required to purchase something from their restaurant if we are going to occupy space in it.
I also talk to him about the banquet rooms. The small rooms seat 40 people and cost $75 a day. They will set the room up for us. We do not have to purchase any food if we don't want to but if you want, food and drinks are just a few feet away.
I also talked with the archery department manager to see if we can use their indoor range if we want to shoot afterwards. He said he would not have a problem with us using the range if his department isn't using it to service their customers. This is not a big range 10 yards max but we can fling some arrows if we want. The other options are to go somewhere after the meeting and shoot. Shawnee Mission Park has a range and (as mentioned earlier) Platte Falls has a range. I believe Shawnee Mission Park has a fee to shoot at their range. I am not sure of the price but it use to be a license that is good for one year. If you are caught with out the license there will be a fine. I don't think Platte Falls charges a fee.
Here are some pictures of the banquet room that seats 40. If we can get 15 people to commit it will cost $5 each to rent a room.

weekends are good!
gonna try and go to three trails this weekend myself.
Weekends work best for me also.
tom, The THree trails clubhas a website atwww.three trailsarchery.com that has the information about their shoot.I REALLy think that the february chili shoot would be a great time to get together. irish an d will probably be there. MIKE HORTon usually makes an appearance as well.
JMO, I wouldn't mind coughing up the $5 to rent the room, we could order our food out in the restaurant...if we're meeting on the weekend, the food area might be a little busier. Also, once in a while a tour bus comes in and floods the restaurant...
My work rotation is 24 on and 48 off. So anytime during that 48 I will make it.
during the month of February, I'm at the firestation on 13,16,19,22,25, and 28th. And in March I work on 8,11,14,17,20,23,26, and 29th. But other than that, I'm flexible.
This sounds great, I would love to get together with other traditional guys. Anytime on Saturdays and Sunday afternoon.
Here ya go guys, a link to our clubs shoot dates, as well as MoJam!!!
http://www.marshallbowhunters.com/marshallbowhunters/index.html
I'm for getting together with everyone, anytime after 6:oo on weekdays and anytime on the weekend works for Me.
I've been planing on going to three trails shoot since I saw it posted here. I'll be the 300# guy in the 4 door blue chevy. Don't be bashful come up and say Hi, I'll be by Myself and looking for someone to shoot with. See you there. bretto
Just a reminder to the Kansas archers the KBA is on the weekend of Feb 22nd, 23rd and 24th. It is being held in Hutchinson again and I believe Mike from the Nocking point will be tied up there. Most of the people there will be tradional shooters. Glenn
Well, while I'd love to go to Plate Falls Conservation area for the get together, I have to agree that Cabellas is probably more centrally located as already stated and weather won't be an issue either.
Of course, it sure would be nice to be able to shoot someplace other than the cabellas "hallway" range. It's really small and narrow and I don't think more than two people could shoot at a time and I think I'd propably not want to bother with trying to bring my bow and arrows into the store during business hours.
We're all hunters so we certainly ought to be able to deal with any type of weather.....
How about this, maybe anyone who wants to can go to Platte Falls a couple hours before the meeting to shoot, work on bows, hike around looking for sheds, BBQ or whatever. Then we can hop in the cars and head to Cabellas for an actual sit down meeting. If we fire up the grill we can even nock the edge off the hunger a bit before we head to Cabellas. Couple dogs, brats, burgers or whatever at the range and then pick up maybe some fries and a coke at Cabellas to comply with the "eat to meet" rule.
Oh yea, and since the range is about 3/4 of a mile off of I-29 (take exit 19 which is road HH to the east) and I-435 hits 29 only a couple miles south of the range I doubt it would take more than about 20-25 minutes to make it to cabellas from the range.
If there are ranges elsewhere around KC or maybe over on the Kansas side, maybe a couple guys could get together there if it's less of a drive and do the same thing.
Dave,
I like the way you think! I am game for your plan. I agree with the hassle of trying to pack our gear into the store and then only having a box to shoot in but I was trying to be accommodating to the whole group. Your plan is much more sensible. Thanks for your input.
I know I said I would wait until Friday 2/15/08 but, there are only four people from the list that haven't chimed in on this thread. Their profiles show that they haven't been to the site in a while. So, if they see this and can join us great but I think we should start moving forward. The four that I have not heard from are: brmize, PrairieHawk, Missouri Bowman and Fis'n River. If anybody knows how to contact them please let them know what is going on.
Kctreeman we have heard from you but you haven't let us know when you are available so I hope you can make it to the meeting. I know you want to hold our meeting at the Three Trails Archery shoot and draw from the experience of their group but I have talked to their treasurer and their officers are going to be too busy managing their shoot to spend time with us. I agree with you though, I think their knowledge would be very beneficial to our group.
From the looks of it Saturday afternoon is the best time to gather everyone. So I propose we set the meeting for Saturday 2/23/08, 1:00 at Cabela's. The head count that I get is 16 possibly 17 people that said Saturday afternoon will work for them.
I am working on a meeting agenda, and I am trying to get the President and the Treasurer from Three Trails Archery to come and join us at our meeting. I think these gentlemen have a lot of information that can really help us get started. I have sent a PM to Bob Burns AKA Stone Sheep asking him to join us and I am planning to go to their shoot this weekend and meet Bob and Jerry in person. If you have time this Sunday 2/17/08, please go and support their efforts. It is $12 for the shoot. Chili and stews will be provided and I believe there is unlimited shooting.
The next question is, and we will put this to a vote, do you want to hold the meeting in the food court and risk not having enough space or would you like to rent one of the banquet rooms for $75?
$75 x 7% tax = 80.25 / 16 people = $5.01 per person. With 17 people the cost is $4.72. This seems inexpensive to be insured a quite place to meet but this is a group decision so please cast your vote and we will go with the majority. I will keep track of the votes on the first page of this thread. I would like to get a decision on this by Sunday so that I can reserve one of the banquet rooms.
I think we are on our way boys. Keep up the good efforts.
Tom
"I think we are on our way boys. Keep up the good efforts."
Tom
No, THANK YOU Tom.
Dave you are welcome! I have been wanting to meet some local guys for some time now and this seems like a great way to do it. I am hoping the benefits of getting a group together will pay out in large dividends of friendships and future adventures together.
After talking briefly with Jerry from Three Trails Archery, I realized how naive I am about putting together a club. Registering with the government and the NFAA, insurance etc... There is a lot of foundation work to do to build a good club. So we will see how deep everyone wants to go. I sure hope I can get Bob and Jerry to join us and answer some of the question that might come up.
Is Saturday the 23rd going to work for you?
Hey Tom, I just realized your post shows you are from Camden Point. Heck you're just up the road from Platte City/Falls. I also have a friend who lives up there whose last name is Mason. I believe he's got quite a bit of family in the area. He's into trad archery also but I don't think he has a computer.
Dave,
Yep. My wife and I have had land outside of Camden Point for 9 years now but we have only lived in the area for 4 years. I have lurked around the archery range a few times looking for trad guys but I never seem to be there at the right time. I have a feeling that will change real soon.
Tell your buddy about our meeting and ask him to join us. I have a neighbor across the road that just moved in and I found out that he shoots a longbow. I will try to get him to join us for the meeting.
We should all do this. If you know someone that shoots traditional archery please contact them and invite them to join us.
Tom
I'm willing to pitch in my part for the banquet hall. Tripper
I'm also willing to pitch in for the room
Kevin
Saturday 23rd 1:00pm should be fine. I should be abel to cough up 5.00 for the room.
Thanks Tom
Brian
I will be in Texas hunting on the 23rd, but still very interested in the group. Let me know how the results of the meeting.
Tom,
I'm cool with just using the dinning area. If we do it in the mid afternoon I've never seen a ton of people up there. That way if a bunch of guys cancel out at the last minute it isn't a big deal.
Chris
Irish
Good luck on hunt and have a safe trip.
I will post some kind of update on this thread along with some pictures.
Tom
I'm with Chris. I'd hate to have 5 guys show up and be forced to pay for the room.
Bill
Hey guys, If enough people don't show up I will cover the extra cost. This will be alot of fun just getting to meet up and visit.
Chris is right though not to many people midday.
It dosen't matter to me either way.
Good luck down in Texas Mel :archer:
Tracy
As far as I know next Saturday is open for me. It's a pretty fair drive but it'll be nice just to meet some of you guys.
Dennis
1:00 on the 23'rd works for Me, and I'll gladly chip in on the room costs. Looking forward to meeting Everyone. bretto
I'm in barring an emergency, room or no room I am planning on it. Ben
Okay...
Our buddy Chris put a thought out there that I didn't think of and he is right. There could be just a few people showing up for this and the small group would feel compelled to pay more than what they had anticipated on and some of the people may not have wanted the banquet room in the first place. So this is what I am going to do. I am going to go ahead and get the banquet room for us and if you want to chip in then go ahead and if the banquet room is something that you feel is totally unnecessary then you don't have to worry about it.
Thanks Chris for your input it was a very good observation. I would have really felt bad if your scenario had taken place.
The reason I want to get the banquet room is to add a professional feel to our meeting and some privacy.
KS Trapper
Thank you! That was a very generous offer. I am looking forward to meeting all of you. We may not have Texas Sweat to look forward to but at least we have something fun coming over the horizon.
Tom
Hey, here's another thought maybe....
Might ask around a little at Cabellas and find out if you could put up a flyer near the front doors a couple days in advance. I know a lot of guys who shoot trad don't have computers but I don't know many of them who don't pop into Cabellas every once in a while. Might snag a few more that way. Might also get a couple to show up who don't shoot trad yet but have been thinking about or are just curious. It's been my experience that if a guy is even a little bit interested in trad all you have to do is get them in contact with somebody who actually does it and let the hook set itself...
Cabellas might be very favorable to this simply because if a fella got bit by the trad bug, "Well gosh, there just happens to be a nice modest selections of trad bows right downstairs. Come on and I'll show them to ya."
And for THAT purpose, the shooting lane is more than sufficient.
p.s. I think I still have the lists somewhere that we made up in the past when I had the other get togethers at Platte Falls. Should be about 15 names in all with phone numbers if I can find them.
Well shoot, got told I have to work that afternoon.
Sorry I won't be able to make, maybe next time...
Hey fatman, if you ever need anyone to shoot with, get ahold of me--I too am from the 'burg! I'll be in Wichita for a few more months, then moving back home.
:scared: :scared: :scared: to create a spot :saywhat: for us :saywhat: if we need to.
Tom,
Shoot, I wouldn't have thought those rooms would get much use. Heck, I didn't even know they existed until you told me about them.
I'm sure we can find a spot especially if we meet up and cruise Cabela's for a while to let the lunch crowd thin out.
Sorry you did all that leg work for not but I still really appreciate what you did.
Looking forward to seeing some familar faces and some new ones as well.
Chris
Yep, a big hand for Tom for puttin' this thing together :clapper:
Thanks guys.
We'll make it work and have a good time doing it.
Thats too bad about the room. But I'm sure we can make things work anyway. I can't wait to finally put some faces to these names. I agree, GREAT JOB Gatekeeper for bringing us all together. Tripper
Room? We don't need no stinkin room. Heck if we can't muscle in on the food court we'll use the parking lot. Thanks for all Your effort Tom.
See Everyone next Saturday. bretto
Thanks Tom :archer:
If anybody needs a ride let me know.
Tracy
All right I have good news!
Another hurdle has been crossed. Bob, AKA Stone Sheep, the president of Three Trails Archery will be joining us for our meeting.
It will be nice to have him share some of the experiences that he has encountered while maintaining the Three Trails Archery Club, answer some of our questions and maybe give us a little guidance.
Thanks Bob I am glad you can join us. :clapper:
Also, the Three Trails shoot scheduled for Sunday 2/17/08 has been cancelled due to upcoming weather conditions. The shoot has been rescheduled. See the link below.

How can we contact you when you get here and how long do you plan to stay?
Tom
So, is anybody intersested in hitting Platte Falls before the Cabellas meeting?
Jerry has a great story on Dall sheep hunting in the "Articles" section....
Dave, I could hit Platte Falls after the meeting if your interested.
Before or after, it doesn't matter to me.

Sure Dave I'll meet you there and shoot with you. Is 9:00 a good time for you?
Can someone recap the plans that have been discussed on this thread. I read through it and missed the date for the meeting. Also, I thought in the beginning that it was mentioned that a club was not going to be formed, but now I am seeing that we are having a speaker to discuss the details of forming a club. I maybe missing something and I would like to go to the meeting.
This coming Saturday, the 23rd, at 1pm.
See ya there Ricky.

Ricky,
Aeronut has it right Saturday, February 23-08 at 1:00. Our planned meeting spot will be the upstairs restaurant at Cabela's. It is possible that the restaurant will be busy at 1:00 so we may have to spend some time walking around the store and wait for the restaurant crowd to thin out.
You will recognize me at the store because I'll be the guy dressed in camouflage that has the goofy smile on his face. :bigsmyl:
:biglaugh: Just kidding... I will post a picture of myself on here soon so that you can I.D. me at the store.
The plan is to decide whether or not we want to form a club. There will be some legal efforts that will need to be made, individual responsibilities, club dues to be paid and I am sure many other things that will need to be done if we are to form a real archery club. So these are some of the subjects that we will be discussing. After hearing all of the requirements that need to be met to form a club, the majority of the group may decide that all that is really wanted is to gather once a month or so and shoot. Another purpose of the meeting is simply to introduce ourselves to other traditional archers in the area.
I will also post a meeting agenda (I will try to post the picture and the agenda today) for everyone to see and get some feedback from you guys on it.
Yes we will be having a guest. Bob Burns from Three Trails Traditional Archery Club will be joining us at our meeting. In the tread that you started, Bob offered to answer any question that we might have to get a club started so I took him up on his offer.
I hope to see you on Saturday.
Tom

Do you approve of the meeting agenda?
3 to 4 hours seems long to me. I have a short attention span :D
See you on Saturday.
Bill
Does seem a little long, but it looks like you're trying to cover a lot of ground...I'll be there, but I may need to "bug out" early as my wife has plans Saturday evening
Kevin
If the meeting is too long how long would you like to meet? I am pretty green at this so your input is appreciated. I have opened my whole day up for this so time is not an issue for me.
I anticipated 15 people showing up for this meeting and calculated the time off of that. With a half hour allocated for introductions, that is 2 minutes per person.
The individual expectations portion of 1 hour 15 minutes allows each person 5 minutes to voice their thoughts.
The guess speaker portion of 1 hour is pretty much like the rest of this purely a guess. I am not expecting Bob to give a speech, but I am guessing there will be questions from the group that he can answer. It is very possible that he will answer all the questions during the "individual expectations" portion of the meeting and the hour allocated for him will vanish.
The agenda is really just a shot in the dark attempt by me to layout the subjects that I thought we might want to discuss in a structured format. I thought it might help everyone prepare their thoughts and questions before the meeting. If you guys want to do away with the meeting agenda, that is fine with me. :bigsmyl:
Hey guys, been away from archery for quite some time but I hope to be able to get back into it soon. Have a half finished bow that's been screaming my name in the garage for a long time.
I will not be able to come to your meeting on the 23 but would be interested in reading any minutes. Also: when the weather's warmer some place like Shawnee Mission park would be a nice place to get together as they have a range and room for everyone to get together (and eat!)
Just a thought. Good luck with your meeting.
If everyone takes time to introduce and give their expectations, I think your 2 hour allotment on that will be fine (maybe you need to bring an egg timer); if some are getting weary, they may not want to stay for Stone Sheep's talk. I don't think we'll resolve everything in a single meeting...
Again, Tom, thanks for your efforts in putting this shindig together
Looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday
:campfire:
Kevin (fatman)
Tom,
I'll be there...my wife's birthday is the 22nd so we will celebrate that night so I might have to leave a little early.
Looking forward to the meeting.
Chris
Dave I sent you an e-mail yesterday about us getting topgether to shoot at Platte Falls before the meeting Saturday. I can be there along with ksbowman from Paola, Ks.
Let Me know if it is on for Saturday at 9:00am.
Waiting too hear from you....ONE SHOT... :D :D :D :)
I will be there at 9:00 and look forward to meeting you.
If interested, Wyandotte County Lake has a small 40 yard archery range on it and it's about five minutes away from Cabelas. (Just for future meetings). Tripper

Tripper,
Are archers required to purchase a license to shoot at the Wyandotte range or can we just show up and shoot? I know Shawnee Mission Park has a fee. If a license is required, were do we buy it and what is the cost?
Thanks for the info.
Tom
I teach H/E classes there every Sept., yes they have a Archery Range but no targets, you will need to bring your own if you want to shoot there, as for the fee or Lic. I don't know, you can call the K.C.K. Park Dept for info....ONE SHOT... :) :) :)
Gatekeeper lookng forward to meeting you also....ONE SHOT... :) :) :) :D
Gail,
9:00am on Saturday whould be great PROVIDED I don't get forced to work either a double shift friday night or forced to come in for Saturday on day shift. Things have gotten a little weird at work in the overtime department and I'm the junior guy so I get forced in pretty regularly. I should know for sure by Friday.
More food for thought....
I just called the Nocking Point, and talked to Mike about pricing on targets and kind of gave him an idea what we're up to....he is going to have a 20-target course on his property as soon as the ice thaws and he can get some brush cut...says a lot of his weekend customers come quite a ways, and he thought it would be nice to have a place to shoot.....
I'd like to throw out some things for everyone to think about BEFORE the meeting so you have time to work up an opinion of different aspects of what we are trying to do. Might save some time when we actually sit down to talk face to face and it may also help you think up something you would like to see done a certain way.
Tom, I hope you don't mind me throwing all this out like this but I still don't know if I'm going to have to work Saturday or not so I wanted to put out some ideas here. I certainly don't want to steal your thunder. :D Basically, I'm hoping to USE ya to do what I wasn't able to pull off myself. I think all this stuff up but dont' get it done. Usually because I work goofy shifts or off days compared to all the people I'm trying to get involved.
Anyway, I really APPRECIATE you making the attempt at this whole club idea and I hope it works out for all of us.
In the past when I was looking in to trying to start some sort of a local club I talked to the area manager for Platte Falls and a couple of the grounds keepers and they were all for the idea of having a club use Platte Falls as their home base. Partly because they want to promote archery and partly because they would appreciate the help in maintaining the range.
I also spent quite a bit of time thinking about what sort of goals should be set for the club like:
1)Promoting archery in general and traditional and primitive archery in particular.
2)Doing our best to involve local kids whether children of members, local single parents, cub scouts or youth groups.
3)Get the women involved. Wives, daughters and girlfriends who understand and enjoy our hobby as much as we do are a wonderful thing.
4)Possibly have a mentoring program for anyone interested in trad archery whether a grown man who already shoots a compound or anyone who is simply curious about bows.
5)A couple or three solid annual events that members will really look forward to such as a big spring 3D shoot, a fish shoot, a mini mojam, maybe an early fall group deer and turkey hunt or a late season bunny stomp.
6)I'd rather NOT see 3D shoots centered around scores, prizes or prize money. A raffle of donated items chozen by drawing used score cards is more fun for all and takes the pressure off. UBM does it this way.
If we form a club, some of the less interesting points to think about are things like targets. That is, purchasing and possibly more importantly storing them. Can't leave them out at a public range or they would either get shot out, destroyed or stolen. A rented storage area costs money each month.
Also, dues. Possibly an initial "buy in" of an ammount that would actually come close to buying a 3D target. Then an anual dues. I'd like to see a setup like the UBM where if you become a member, your family (wife and kids) are equally eligible to participate.
A seperate fee for wear and tear of targets when we do hold a shoot. Reduced for members compared to a walk up shooter.
Would we want or seek sponsorship by a larger state org like the United Bowhunters of MO?
If so, would we be allowed to fall under their insurance?
Well, there are more but that's enough for now. Think about them, make a list of your own to bring or post a list of what you would like to see right here before Saturday and we can get a head start on the whole thing.
Dave,
I don't mind a bit! There isn't any thunder to be stolen, because to pull this off it will be a group effort not a one person show. And by the way......This post made me smile from ear to ear! :bigsmyl: Yeeehaaw!
Tom
Sounds like the meeting is starting early! :D
Tom & Dave, sounds like you've been busy... :notworthy: :campfire:
Kevin (fatman)
Can someone post directions to the Platte Falls
range? I'm gonna TRY to make it...
also, everybody ought to read the thread "any presidents out there" here on the Pow Wow..
Go I-29 North towards St. Joe, and get off on HH hwy(Platte City) make a right and follow HH about 3/4 mi. - 1mile and its on the left.
I'm gonna try and be there at 9:00am as well.
Brian, are there signs for the archery range?
I'm one of those guys that "CAN miss it...."
No there aren't any signs. From the highway you will go up and over a hill and when you get to the bottom start looking to your left and you shouldn't miss it. You can see the target butts first then you'll see the entrance and the pavillion.
Kevin,
You observation about the government entity is a good point and you are right about turning something fun into work. So one of our main goals should be to make the whole experience as fun as possible. Sometimes work can be fun. :wavey:
See you there.
Tom
gatekeeper, I work for Wyandotte County and have a couple friends who work for park and rec's there on the lake. I will find out tomorrow if there is any charge. I stump shoot behind the range about twice a week and have never had any trouble. Tripper
Guess I'll bump this back up top.
I just got home from work and have done back to back double shifts the last two days. There is still a real chance I'll have to work a double shift tomorrow and if I do that'll put me at about 9 hours sleep in 72 hours so..... I might not make it to Platte Falls but I think I'll for sure make it to Cabellas. If I don't work the double shift tonight I'll plan on being at Platte Falls in the morning.
On the need to include all types of archery, I doubt that would be correct. The UBM is (I'm sure?) a registered club and it is pretty much a trad club. Thinking back though, I do recall that it was said at meetings that it was NOT an exclusively traditional club so maybe they are not registered that way but they simply don't have any events other than trad shoots so.....that's who shows up and that's who joins.
Aw come on Dave you can handle it. Just be up there at 9:00am
I have a couple other trad-shooters that aren't TradGangers coming tomorrow. I figure the more the merrier. See everyone tomorrow. Tripper
Well it's after midnight but I'll go ahead and post for Brian and Gail that I got out of doing the third double shift so I plan to be at Platte Falls in the morning.
FYI, I've got some firewood in the back of the truck and I took a pack of round steak "eye" cuts out of the freezer to thaw. Gonna bring them along tomorrow and maybe light the grill. I think there are abou 8 pieces and only about 3 or 4 of us going to Platte Falls (far as I can tell) so maybe we can have a bite to eat before we head to Cabellas.
Guys, just wanted to say I had a great time visiting with everybody. Great bunch of guys and I'm looking forward to future adventures with everyone. Tripper
I agree. I'm also looking forward to some future events where we can get together. Platte Falls was fun. We got to shoot and B.S. a little. Thanks for bringing the eats Gale and Dave. Thanks Tom for putting this thing together :clapper:
I enjoyed it also,it was very good to be able to put a face and personality to a familiar post name. Ben
I had not posted on this thread because I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to make it. I'm really glad I could! I also really enjoyed the opportunity to meet you guys.
Thanks, I hope some good times come together in the future. Thanks Tom for your patience putting the meeting together.
Tim
I mapquested McCune Ks. 3hr ride by Aeronut!! Sorry I didn't get a chance to talk with you that much. However it was a pleasure to meet you.
Tim, Likewise. I recognized the name but didn't make the correlation to Braveheart Archery.
Man I hope we all hook up again soon.
It's really only a little over two hours. It was good to meet everyone and I had a good time. I'm heading for OJAM next month and it's only a 4 hour drive.
I tried to kill two birds with one stone today but didn't quite get that done. I had planned on picking up a load of Hickory lumber but got some false directions. Seems that Google Maps was only off by 26 miles and when I got the the lumber store they were closed.
Dennis
Good time sitting around listening to stories and talking about bows with other trad gang members. Neet to see must of us had the same idea about just trying to get together and have fun rather than a formal club. It should be more enjoyable this way.
I had to leave a little early so I'm not sure if you guys decided on a weekend to try and get back together to shoot? We could all load up a target and head back to Platte Falls. We could set up the targets on the walk through range and shoot away. I'm guessing Dave is up for another round on the BBQ. Next weekend is out for me as I'm going to go plant trees at my brothers place but maybe something the second weekend in March. Lets keep this thread going until we get our first shoot time lined up.
Tripper, I mapquested Colegate, OK and its only 6 hours to some pig hunting. Might just have to check that out.
Chris
Yea, I had a blast too! I enjoyed meeting everyone but I have to say, next time we get together, EXPECT me to have to get your names all over again. I bet I couldn't get 3 names right right now besides the couple of you whose names I already knew.
I THINK the second weekend in March is when the 3 trails shoot is but it may be the third one as the month starts on a weekend....
Might just think about making plans to go to their shoot or have one of our own with a little grillin' action? Maybe a different weekend? Heck it don't matter to me. As long as I'm not forced to work I'll be there.
I'd sure like to get out as a group and do some shed hunting and/or roving.
Great time! And the fun is just starting.....
Hope we keep this goin', this is gonna ba a blast...
Gang,
I had an absolute blast! I think I saw my wife's eyes start to glass over last night while talking to her, because my experience of meeting you guys was all I wanted to talk about. I could not have formed a nicer bunch of guys had I hand picked the people myself. I walked away from our meeting with more than I had hoped for...thanks guys for making my day. :bigsmyl:
I would also like to send out a special thank you to the gentlemen from Three Trails Traditional Archery. It was very generous of the two of you to take time out of your day and spend time answering our questions. :campfire:
Gail and Dave,
Thank you for supplying the food for our shoot. The venison burgers tasted great.
Tom
It was a pleasure to meet some other Tradgangers for Me as well. Looking forward to next time.
Hard to believe that kstrapper and I had never met before We've ran the same areas and know a lot of the same people. The diversity of everyone on this website is amazing. The fact that Everyone in a different profession can get together and have something in common like traditional archery just blows Me away.
I'm working on a raised platform on My boat for spring right now, won't be long till the water warms up enough to shoot some fish hope to have several of You guys join Me.
Thanks again for the efforts of Everyone involved with getting us together I had a blast!! bretto
Sorry I missed the meeting, I was really looking forward to meeting you guys. About an hour before I was going to leave, the mail arrived. In it was my acceptance to law school. That caused my plans to change.
Brett, I couldn't agree with you more...
I found that I have have a Ganger 10 miles from me (ksbowman) and another about a mile away (PrairieHawk). My thanks go out to the mods and administrators for this site, they are the ones that made this possible for so many like-minded guys to get together. We all embrace the "old ways" but sometimes high-tech CAN be our friend...
I'd also like to thank the guys from Three Trails for taking the time to come up. I really think that you will gain some attendance at your shoots, it sounds like you guys have a really neat organization. Also thanks to recurvericky and Gatekeeper for keeping this thing alive and making the effort to get all of us together.
It was great meeting everyone. I think we have a good start to some real fun outings in the future. I had a hard time explaining to my daughter that I was going to meet a bunch of guys I met over the internet after drilling into her head the dangers of doing that exact thing but it sure turned out well. Thanks to Tom for putting this together! We owe him one.
Bill
Chris, I have some friends down there, so if we decided not to pay for the Coalgate hunt, We could definately camp in a pasture and hunt private. You guys got me pumped up. I'm ready for something. Gatekeeper, the way I see it, you have to give a little to get a little. I'll share whatever land and other hunting opportunity I have with a great bunch of guys like the "KC Traditional Network". Just thought I'd try it out. Sounds good to me. Thanks everyone for the hard work and time off it took to meet. Tripper
BMN, that is the same thing My 16 year old Daughter told Me. LOL!!
After reading the post about the meeting, I am really sorry that I was not able to make the meeting. I fond out Friday that my daughter had a girl scout thing that I HAD to attend. Hopefully, I will be able to attend the next gathering and I will unless someone dies.
Gatekeeper, would you be willing to post the highlights of the meeting for those of us that were not able to attend. Even though I was not able to attend the gathering, I would like to thank you for bringing everyone together.
Jbb, congrats on the law school, I'm sure I'll need your help someday, buddy ole pal, Tripper
Gail Darling here and I want to assure everyone that was at the Platte Falls Archery Range and Meeting at Cabela's afterwards, that I had a Great time and really enjoyed meeting and talking with you all you Trad Gangers.
Seems like Iam the Elderly Trad Ganger in the group.(will be 70 this year)
Thanks for all the kind words everyone said about the different Bows that I had made and brought to the Range. I got a couple of good suggestions, from you on how to improve on the Grip area on My Bow Designs.
It is one thing to build Bows, and shoot them yourself, be it Recurves or Long Bows, down in my basement, but to have other Archers shoot them at the Range and then express there likes and suggestions for improvements whatever, is how I will become a better Bowyer, just want to say thanks again for there honest input.
Looking forward to our next get togther....ONE SHOT... :) :) :) :D :D
I had a great time yesterday :) Just what I exspected a great bunch of guys.
Really looking forward to getting togather again and doing some shooting and visiting. :wavey:
Tracy
Okay as promised here is a summary of what was discussed during the meeting on Saturday, February 23, 2008
We had a total of 18 people show up for this meeting, with the majority of the group being Trad Gang members. Those that were not Trad Gang members were people that were visitors to the site and saw the thread or they were invited by a Trad Gang member.
The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss whether or not a traditional archery club was wanted or needed for the Kansas City and surrounding areas. Some of the concerns in forming a formal club were: insurance, finding a place to setup a 3D range and static range, distance of travel for all members, accessibility (open to the members at all times or opened at scheduled times) and the expense of starting up a club.
The consensus was (for now) not to form a formal club but to form a network for the area traditional archers to draw from. It was determined that having an actual formal club was really not as important to the group as having a way of contacting, meeting and gathering traditional archers together on a regular basis without the headaches of running and maintaining a formal club. By working off of a network system there would be minimal buy-in for everyone interested in participating and the location for gathering to shoot or meet has the possibility of constantly changing rather than a designated location that might only be convenient for a few in the group. Having a network could also increase the possibilities for everyone involved to have opportunities at different experiences that otherwise may not have ever been available to them.
It was agreed by everyone at the meeting that Trad Gang is an invaluable resource to us all and the site is the common thread that brought us all together. But, the majority of the people at the meeting agreed that they were apprehensive about contacting anyone on the site out of the blue to meet and shoot. Some of the people found that they commonly frequent the same local areas and / or events but their paths had never crossed until the meeting. Some of the people (myself included until Saturday) have/ had never had the opportunity to shoot with another traditional archer. So there is a need for our local people to feel comfortable with contacting other traditional archers for fun, help or advice. To bring us together on a local level we opted for trying to start a local "network" of traditional archers rather than a club.
This is how the proposed KC Traditional Network is to work. Any traditional archer interested in participating will have a required buy-in of one 3D target. The choice of the target is up to the individual. The storage of the target will be the responsibility of person that owns the target. All participants will also have to register themselves with the group by providing their contact information. The contact information should consist of: Your real name, Handle, address, phone number(s), and email address. This contact information will only be available to the other people in the group. The contact information will not be posted for the general public to read. There was a desire in the group to have a way of storing the contact information in an area that can only be viewed by the people in the group. How this will work (storing the information in a secure spot) has not been determined as of yet. For now, we have elected to use the private message option in Trad Gang. Any Trad Gang member within the Kansas City area interested in being put on the list should send me a PM and I will add your information to the list and send you the group list. For now I will only send the updated list out on Fridays instead of sending out an updated list every time someone new sends me information.
There was only one vote that was taken during the meeting and it was conducted by a show of hands. The question was: "do we want to be a traditional archery only network?" The vote was an overwhelming yes. There would be an exception for bringing children into the group that may already own a wheel bow to keep them interested in archery, with the understanding that they will be mentored to the traditional archery ways and eventually be shooting traditional bows only. Another topic that was brought up was a name for the group. Near the closing of the meeting names were being evaluated but a name had not been decided on. I have been calling the group the KC Traditional Network. Currently this name is up for review and any suggestions are welcomed.
When a shoot is schedule, everyone in the KC Traditional Network and their immediate family is welcome to join us. Correct me if I am wrong but I believe immediate family was determined as: Spouse, children, parents, siblings and boyfriend / girlfriend. A person's buy-in of one 3D target has assured their family members a place to shoot but the family members should be accompanied by the person that is signed-up on the group list. Everyone participating in a shoot is to bring and setup their target. During the shoot all the targets will be shared with the group. When the shoot is over, everyone is responsible for removing the target that they brought. Anyone in the group can bring one guest with the intention of introducing and mentoring the guest to traditional archery.
Shoots will take place on public lands that have archery fields and ranges or were permission has been granted. Some shoots may take place on private land that someone in the group owns or has acquired permission for us to use. All shoots on public land may require us to share our targets with non traditional archers unless we are able to gain exclusive rights to the space during our shoots. The diversity of our gathering areas will be totally dependent on the group's participation. If there are only a few people in the southland actively arranging gatherings, then we should expect most of our shoots to be in the southern parts of KC. The same principle will more than likely apply if most of the people that are arranging the shoots live in the northlands of KC. Anybody in the group can start gathering people for a shoot, hunt or outing. Gathering of group members can consist of 2 people or twenty people on weekdays or weekends. Gathering of a group is not limited to target shooting. Gatherings can involve hunts, BBQ's, canoe trips, campouts, restaurant dinners or anything to bring traditional archers together.
The topic of food at the shoots was not discussed but it will need to be addressed in the near future. For simplicity we probably should work off of a "bring your own food and eating supplies" setup.
The main purpose of the network is to bring the local traditional archers together and get us out of our basements and backyards to share talents, knowledge, create new friends and to open the opportunity for local traditional archers to share their passion for this sport.
Thanks,
Tom
PS,
For those of you that were at the meeting, if I have made a mistake or forgot to put something on here please bring it to the group's attention.
:clapper: Gee Tom, you did good to get all that. All I did was yack!
Now who's gonna volunteer to buy the Buffalo target, and can I shoot it with broadheads?! :D
Nice job Tom :notworthy: The only thing I would add is that if someone is interested in joining a formal club I believe Bob indicated that Three Trails has some openings.
I need to go target shopping :D No Tim, I'm not buying the buffalo.
Bill

Way to go Tom :knothead:
Tracy
Hey Tom, it's nice to see another left handed shooter in the group.
Great job on the review of the meeting. I wish I could have been there, its sound like the meeting was very successful. The decision to form a network of traditional only members was great. Since, I moved to Kansas a year ago, I have been wanting to get together with other tradtional archers and this is what I was looking for.
Also, as far as each member purchasing a 3D target, I wonder if we could get a bulk discount from either Bass Pro or Cabela's?
Ricky, There was talk at the meeting that Mike at the Nocking Point might be an option for getting targets at a discount. hopefully we'll get to meet sometime soon.
Sorry I missed the meeting as well though I am interested. I would almost guarantee Rogers Lures would work a deal. Im certain it would be better then the big stores.
Thanks Ricky.
Just remember you are the one that stirred up everyone's interest in this and the rest of us built on to it. Please send me a PM with all of you contact information so I can put you on the list.
I am looking forward to meeting you in the near future. By the way, on 3/16/08 Three Trails Traditional Archery is having a shoot and I am planning on attending it.
SlowBow, does Braveheart Archery have any target connections?
Tom, might I make a suggestion that those registered send you a quick PM once they acquire their targets? If we end up with 18 whitetail deer, that's fine, but if we knew what people were buying it might point others in a direction that would add some variety....
fatman
Hey, this sounds great! I like the network idea over a club. I'm a little strapped right now as far as getting a target, but I am definitely interested once I get some extra money. Sounds like fun!
Kevin, I'll have to look into that as I've never pursued it.
Tracy, somebody makes a buffalo but I think you'd have to pay just to look at a picture of one! Second mortgage kind of target I think.
Ya know, the idea of getting a list going of who wants to buy what type of target is a good one. Kinda like having a covered dish party.... Don't want everybody to show up with either chips or soda. :D
Maybe, if we contacted a couple or three different sources like mentioned, we could work up a list of what each type target would cost at the discounted price and then people could choose according to their budget. Honestly, if someone is seriously strapped for cash, I personally don't care if they opted for something cheaper like a U-stuff-it bag target. But, I expect that for the same price you could get one of the small game 3D's like a fox, possom or coon. They're a hoot to shoot at and tough to hit. I guess we could also have a time frame for people to come up with "their" target?
I expect the most popular will be deer, hog, turkey, bear in about that order but don't forget about things like pronghorn, fox, wolf, elk, alligator etc.
Am I wrong to assume that the smaller targets like fox and coon are cheaper? I really don't know if they run cheaper because they are smaller or just as much (or more) because they don't sell as many of them.
I've already got a turkey in non strut. What else do some of you already have?
As for cooking/food arrangements I'd be happy to bring my smoker grill to about any shoot I am able to attend if I can get help getting it out of the truck when I get there. Here at the house I can back up to a dirt bank and load it across some 2X4's into the truck but at thr range on flat ground it will take 3 to 6 guys to get it out safely. It is an Oklahoma Joe brand and it will smoke or grill. It's not near as big as a tow behind smoker but it's bigger than most regular grills and will cook a ton of meat. I usually use charcoal along with a healthy amount of firewood like oak or locust if just grilling or hickory if smoking. I think an easy feed would be just a bunch of brats, hot dogs and maybe some burgers. I've also got a two burner high BTU propane stove kinda like two turkey fryers in one stove that I could bring for odds and ends or if somebody had some fish to fry. And honestly, I kinda just like to cook.
Dave, the "varmint" targets are indeed less expensive, and they look like a blast!
The Ames pillow targets are about $20 each...I've got 5 of them on the way. I'll also be picking out a 3D....
I don't have anything, I shot what I had all to flinders! :knothead:
I also checked and none of our sources are going to be of any help.
I also noticed when I started looking around they were more expensive than I remembered! :help: ZIKES did Al-Qaida sabotage the foam market?
Yeah, Tim, I noticed your buff target runs $8-900! :scared:
If you want some sticker shock look at the Rinehart targets. The moose runs over 2 grand and the replacement insert is $340 :scared: The guys at Three Trails have some serious money tied up in their range.
Dave you can always count on Me for helping out with the cooking, bringing some Vension for us all, like you I too enjoy doing it. Don't know how much help I would be in unloading and loading that big cooker of yours thou. But guess I could be the side walk Superintendent. HA HA....ONE SHOT... :D :D :D :D :D :)
Pretty sure I could get the targets. You guys should know the box stores are a hassel lol.

rg176bnc,
Thanks for posting.
I have a few questions for you.
What brand of targets can you get? What quantity has to be bought to get a price break? Can individuals come in and place an order or would we have to pool all the money together and have one person place an order?
I'll talk to them tomorrow and see what he says. How many guys are we talking? The more you buy the better the price Im sure. He used to have McKenzie though I didnt see any last time I was there. Probably pool the money, but let me hollar at Steve and see what he says.
Any shoots this w/e? The weather is supposed to be awsome.
Working on a $ list. McKenzies I believe. Could be about a week though. I'll keep ya updated.

Great thanks Robert
Dang, I am sorry I missed the meeting! I was actually in Chicago at a business meeting until Saturday night.
We should get some hats and/or t-shirts made up so when we go to shoots like a Three trails we can easily find each other. Might also help grow the membership because people will ask what it is.
Good thinking!!
For targets I would check with Rogers Sporting Goods in Liberty. They beat em all on everything else- by a bunch!!
:goldtooth:
What is the lastest on the target prices? I have not seen much activity on this thread lately.
Ricky - Tom sent out an email a while back. I sent it your way.
Bill
Thanks, my kids may have deleted it
I havent heard from a soul on targets yet. I know Gate Keeper is gonna get some. I would be dissapoited to offer that deal and nobody take advantage of it.
Robert, I'll be giving you a call in the next week or so. Just haven't got around to it yet.
Bill
Sounds good.

I live in Independence, Mo and may be interested in joining. Let me know where it all stands.
Dave, I sent Tom Porter (Gatekeeper) a pm about your interest.
By the way, I used to belong to the White Oak Bowhunters from Lamar Missouri. I think some of the first things we will need to be thinking of, as a group, is setting up a Club Charter and establishing a set of By-Laws to be voted on by all Charter members within the first few meetings. I will be happy to assist in that area, if you want...
Dave
Dave, When we got together last February we had a general feeling by all attending that we didn't want a formal club but, a network to contact each other and shoot, hunt or meet. That is what we have done so far. We have had our own 3d get together and shoot also gone to various 3d shoots. There is a recap of that get together by Gatekeeper on page 9 on 2-25-08. Glad to have you with us and hope to see you soon.I'm sure you'll enjoy being around this great group of guys. Thanks, Ben
