Hey, I recently got my hands on a used Jo Jan mono fletcher. I have been trying to use it with Bohning fletch tite platinum, which seems to work ok. Sometimes a feather rips of though. Why?
Also, what are some alternatives to fletching glue. Is there anything cheaper?

Sounds like maybe a tad bit too much glue, which glues the feather to the clamp. You can get tape for the clamp that will solve that, or try to use less glue, or be very careful and apply only to the quill. I did very much the same thing when I started fletching.
Fletch tite platinum is great for aluminums, carbons, and wraps. If you try to use it on woodies with anything other than bohning sealer, it wont bond.
I know a lot of people use duco cement with good results. It is readily available at dollor stores, walmart, etc. I have used it before and am happy with the results.
Crazy glue gel also works. Its fast set up helps alot.
I think most that try fletch tape love it, another option you may want to look into.

What Ishi said pretty much sums it up. I use duco on my woods, and super glue on everything else these days. I have 3/4 of a roll of fletch tape kicking around, if you'd like to try it, you can have it.

Duco is probably the best glue for fletching to wood shafts. It bonds very well to most all finishes used with wood shafts. WalMart has the best price I've found, 0.97, and is always available. I squeeze the whole tube into a small squeeze bottle as it has a much better tip than the regular glue tube. The hole in the Duco tube is pretty big and hard to get a nice glue line with. Lots of folks like the fletch tape, but I'm not one of them.
In lieu of the antistick tape for the clamp grab the clamp and a candle and rub the edges of the clamp jaws vigorously. Try to keep the glue off of the clamp but if you mess up a little the wax will help immensely. I also prefer Duco for wood shafts.
In My Opinion, Saunders NPV Fletching Glue is THE GLUE to Use. Just My 2 Cents.
