Title: help finishing ipe
Post by: Russell S. on November 07, 2009, 08:03:00 PM
My bow looks great only problem is the spar urethane is still sticky 24 hrs later on top of the ipe (and only the ipe).
what i did,  About 1hr before finishing i wiped it down really good with acetone.  about 10 mins before finishing i hit it again with denatured alcohol.  I never soaked the wood in acetone like i bet i should have prior to using.

my thoughts on what to do.  First Wait.  I am going to give it another 12 hrs or so to set up.  if it doesn't set i will sand it all off then seal the ipe.  i am considering the old super glue seal, what would you guys recommend?

You could try shellac to seal the ipe first then add whatever finish over that. Try a sample piece first to be sure it is compatible. Shellac generally sticks to anything and dries quickly.

I use Deft in a spray can.  It'll dry within 15 minutes or so.  You can put on two coats, and then any finish you want on top of that.

Spray lacquer by Min wax will dry, or you can seal it with CA (super glue) and finish it with whatever afterwards.
