Title: Robertson Vision Falcon vs Silvertip
Post by: Precurve on February 09, 2008, 06:33:00 PM
I've had a chance to shoot a Robertson but never a Schafer Silvertip.  For those who've shot both, how do they compare?

I have owned and shot both. For me the Robertson was the best grip wise, I never could get used to the Schafer grip. Both are great shooting bows so either would be a good choice. The Robertson is probably a bit faster if that matters to you.

I have both, I own 2 Vision Falcons recurves, 2 Purist longbows and 3 Silvertip recurves. I found the grip a little more to my liking on the Silvertips BUT thats because I like a narrow grip. Dick will modify the grip to your liking. I had him remake all mine more narrow and they feel great. Both shoot well, speed is similar if that matters. The Silvertip is a bit heavier and depending on your tastes may or may not be a good thing. Both are pretty, though I think the Vision Falcon may havea slight edge there with nicer lines.

To sum it up- both are 5 star bows and to say which one is better depends on the individual.

If you care to, go to Robertsons website and look at the Purist longbows. The Juniper veneer example is my actual bow. Yote told me before he sent it that it turned out really nice. I guess he decided to use it as the "model" for the line. Very cool.

Choosing between those two would be a tough decision.

Danny's post above shows the importance of test driving the bows yourself...since I prefer the Schafer grip.

I have both in 52# with both being fastflight capable, and the Robertson is 5-8 FPS faster using the same 490 gr arrow.

Workmanship on both is great as is accuracy, smoothness, and good manners.

Yep...tough decision to make.  :banghead:

I've owned neither, but shot several of each over the years.  I echo what those above have already said.  Differences in style, grips, etc., but both top-notch bows.

I've owned a few of each and they are quite different. The Schafer IMHO is more stable at full draw due to the extra wt. I prefer the Schafer grip and really like the checkering option. The Schafer points as well as any bow I've owned. Performance, quality, noise etc are close enough not to matter.
Some would say that you can't go wrong with either, but I believe there is enough difference between them that you owe it to yourself to see which works best for you...  Here are a couple pics..

I think they both offer a try before ya buy deal...ask them and they will send ya one for the price of shipping and insurance..try them both side by side and pick the one ya like best.  I've shot both and didn't care for either one.  Bows are very personal.

ive never worked with a more accomodating, customer-focused shop than Dave and Beth Windauer. They will do everything in their power to make you happy..and Dave is a fine craftsman in every way.

The grips on these bows are very different...and that is the most important thing in any bow- how it fits your hand.

the limbs on Robertson bows are narrower, thinner, with lower tip weight..hence the additional speed.

That also makes them more sensitive to proper handling-stringing and unstringing require strict adherance to using a stringer like the Selway...but that's a good practice with all bows anyway.

The Robertson is the faster bow...apples to apples..but pure speed isn't everything...and I agree, fit and finish are of the highest quality in both bows.

It comes down to you- if I were going to order a custom bow...I would not do so before shooting them both.

I love the Robertson I just found for my best friend's son...probably the prettiest recurve I've ever seen...its a Vision Falcon II..and the performance...at 54 lbs at 28 inches is remarkably quick AND quiet.

With custom bows, you can shoot a dozen from a maker and there will always be one or two of that lot that stand out as exceptional in the way they fit you, and shoot for you..its worth taking the time to try both and then decide so you get EXACTLY what you want.

Just a question concerning the speed department.  The concensous of the post is that the Robertson is a little faster, I was wondering where a Morrison Cheyenne would fit amongst the Schafer and Robertson.

I shot and owned both, I still own the Schafer. I agree with Danny though that I prefer the Robertson grip, but as far as speed wise, I am not sure. My dacron Schafer of the same #age shooting the same is only a few fps slower than the Robertson, so with a FF version I bet it is about dead even. I am ordering another Schafer and asking Dave to make a bit thicker grip for me, I am sending him a bow to copy. Shawn

I think I've had more Morrisons than Tips or Stykbows and I'd say Morrison, Robertson then Tips as far as speed. Not a chrono guy but I've had a half dozen or so of each. Morrisons are quick....

Thanks Lost.  I would also like to here what
Danny Rowan has to say as well since he's own a few of these bows.  Maybe even throw in a Blacktail and my questions would be satisfied.  Not Trying to hijack your thread Precurve.

Guys, I just got a new Morrison Cheyenne with the foam core limbs. I haven't shot a Robertson through a chrono, and the Silvertip I had was a non FF model, but I can tell you that the Morrison is as quick or quicker than any other bow I have shot, except for a Border which was a few fps faster. The Morrison is about 8 fps faster than my Black Widow at the same draw weight.

they all are great bows, I wish I had one of each!

Gottabow; What didn't you like about them?  What's your go-to bow?

I've owned them all- Morrison, Robertson, Schafer & Border and the Schafer was the most user friendly. The FF Silvertips are also very- very fast, somewhat of what you'd call a sleeper. They are smoother/easier pulling than the rest and this might lead you to think slower because you don't feel the preload but the chrono doesn't lie. The Silvertip grip is fantastic and the bows are built extremely well and to top it off the Windauers are first class people.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

How about quiet w/FF?  Again, about the same?

I have FF and it is QUIET.  Don't know how B50 could be more quiet.  I shot just about every 3pc recurve out there before I decided on the Silvertip.  None feel better to me, but do try everything you want, each person is different.

I think it is also clear how much people think of Dave and Beth.  They are good people.

Hey Dave........

I am going to keep my opinions to myself in regards to the bows with the exception of this.

If you decide to go with a Silvertip make sure you get FF. There is nothing to even consider in that decision.

Dave's FF bows will shoot a dacron string although I can't even imagine why you would want to. I have a ton of these bows and the FF set up right with the right string is dead silent and way faster than dacron.

Good luck

Tim

As stated before both are fine bows and I would try to shoot both and make your own decision.
I personally prefer the Silvertip grip, more user friendly for me and more stable.
I own both and haven't had the Robertson off the rack for a while.

I have owned both. They are really different. The Robertson is much "slimmer" in the riser. The limbs on the Schafer are much more "springy". I don't own either anymore but I have to say for me I would pick the Robertson.  BILL

I own a Morrison Cheyenne and IMHO it is the fastest bow I have shot...faster than my fastest Fedora's.  However, there is a lot of loading in the draw on the Morrison so IMHO I like them a few pounds less than my other bows.

Schaffer has the smoothest gentle draw I have yet to feel on a bow.  I like the checkering they do as it doesn't seem to bite the hand.  However, IMHO it is not a speed bow.

I haven't found the perfect bow for me and hope I never do   ;)
