Title: worked on some staves

I spent the day yesterday working down a few staves.  Unfortunatly some bugs got to em so I had to go down a few more rings than I wanted, plus they are so long it took a lot of time, but they did turn out nice.

I think this is what a snakey stave looks like, but there isn't a lot od wood to work with after I got out of the bug tunnels.

and the other end is about an inch and a half. The middle should have enought for a handle.

I still have a few more to go, but you can see the bore holes in the staves, but the billits are clean.

I guess you got a good lesson in either putting some bug killer on em or working em down early on. Something about a lesson with LOTS of labor.   :knothead:

Looks good from my novice view point. I've been afraid to touch my osage until i get a little better at the whole ring chasing thing

On the skinny one you can lay out your bow shape and see if you have enough wood to make the bow. if you need to, you can add a handle block and that should get you by. It looks as if you have enough wood on the thin end.
If you pop the bark off and slop some wood glue(or other sealer)on the "back" of the stave you will not have to worry about the dang gone bugs.

At 93" long I'm sure there is a hunting weight bow in that stave somewhere!  All this ring chasing is very good training. If you think of it as a positive it ain't so bad!

Plenty of wood!

Pat B (as always) has some wise words.  Chasing a ring is a great way to learn a piece of wood.  All staves are different and should be treated individually.

Hey Windtalker - just get a scrap and practice one ring at a time.  You will learn the feel AND the sound of chasing a ring.

I am tickled pink whenever I get close to being able to shape out any weight bow.
