Title: A bow for Jake.
Post by: Dano on July 29, 2009, 10:46:00 AM
Jake (Dan Jaquay) was kind enough to give me an osage stave at Compton's. So I decide to make a bow for him, the fun is buildin em and even more fun giving them. This bow is 64" nTn 50# @28", 1 1/4" at the fades to just past mid limb then tapers to 3/8" tips. The tiller could have been better, but once I shot this bow I decided it was done. This is possibly the quietest bow I have built, don't know if it's the amount of possitive tiller, only 1/4", but it works. The skins are "coachwhip" snake, kinda different, oughta look great once the osage darkens. I got these from Mike Yancey at Cloverdale, Mike thanks they look great.

Dano, your work is inspiring.
Looking at the braced picture it seems that the limb toward the bandsaw has more space between the string and belly but then using the vertical embossment of the metal siding to line up the limb tips on the full draw picture that tiller looks spot on!  Great job.
One of these days my osage bows will turn out.  Until then I keep seeing what a good bow looks like by peaking into your posts.

Thanks for the kind words guy's.

That's what I was looking at too Chris, the brace really shows that positive tiller, but the full draw looks decent. I have been tillering with the handle shaped, and balanced on a half round base, that sure seems to help.

Nice Dano, love the handle work.  Her hips look Timo/Torges inspired.  And the bodock looks plumb good from here too.  It's a hard lesson to learn, when it shoots good, it is good.  What it looks like is sometimes, even frequently relevant, but that ain't the real test.

Will he be drawing it to just the 14" as well?

;-)  I'm playin' whicha boy-i.  Put that pistola down.

You are an awesome man.  Wish we could hang out more.  You ever consider moving to Indy?  I here the lakes are all going dry out your way anyhow.  We got lots of water.

Don't get me started John    :bigsmyl:

There is osage around Indy, and ya'all have a pretty cool race now and then. I could be talked into it.   ;)

Nice looking bow Dano.  Your attention to details really shows.

I do agree with DCM though...... unless that's a 38" arrow.... yank that thing back.  ;)

You too Keith??    "[dntthnk]"

Seriously I don't cut my arrows down, I don't like to loose the weight, and yeah I could prolly get another inch with better form, oh well. Thanks for the good words tho, I appreciate it.

What can I say... David's a bad influence.

As a wood bowyer, I wish a had a shorter drawlength.  I draw about 28 1/2 and that last inch or so really gives the wood a strain on the shorter bows that I like to hunt with.  Set really starts to show itself after about 25".

I shoot carbons, and to get them to fly right off the wide handles we make, I leave them full length and still have to stoot heavy points.

I shoot carbons too Keith, and I've found I can cut my handles down to 3/4" thick or wide, to give me a bigger arrow pass, a little closer to center anyway.

BTW David is a good influence, it's great to have him around. How's that for suckin up?   :bigsmyl:
