Title: YEW STAVES FOR TRADE
Post by: vanislebowyer on July 03, 2009, 09:08:00 PM
hEY everybody,

I live on Vancouver Island, where Yew grows all over the place, and i have a huge harvest of about 50 good staves.  Some have knots, but the trees were all STRAIGHT.  I'm looking for a trade ... any ideas?

This stave is NOT cracked, although it looks like it...that's just a step down from bucking it with a handsaw!

turkey 522:

the staves are ~72 " long...

i am interested in:  sinew, b50 string, osage staves, arrows, broadheads, knives, tools, quivers, bracers....

fujimo:

dude, let's talk quivers/bracers, eh...can i see pics of your work?  Also, a couple tillering cups to fit over the ends of staves, made of sturdy leather, would be great...

dvs hunter:  if you send me two 1/4 lb rolls of b50, red and black, i'll send you a stave.

To figure shipping, we each pay the shipping for what we receive.  We calculate it and then send the difference.  That will probably mean you sending me money for shipping (the difference) and when i receive that I'll send your stave.  Sound good?  Be good if we both received our items around the same time.

hey guys, thanks for all the interest!  This is going to be great for all of us!

I've been busy today, trimming the ends, sealing them with tb2, and cataloguing them according to quality (1s and 2s)...each stave is measured for length, width, and height, and weighed so i can track the moisture content.

I have gone through 28 staves so far.  That's all i can do today.  But of those 28, 10 have 2 bows in them.  That means 38 bows worth of wood so far.  I took some pictures of the cut-off ends to post, so you could see the size, shape, and ring count, but my camera just died so i can't post anything right now.  The ring count is pretty high, though, especially through the sapwood/heartwood transition area.

You men are going to be happy with this yew.

So far nothing longer than 75".  Mostly 70 or 71.  Next weekend, though, i am going after some longer logs and in a couple weeks i'll post pics of warbow-quality staves.

Research their value on the web, and get back to me with your offers.  I look forward to trading with all of you.

I don't think I ever seen bark on yew looking like that.  My yew has always been smooth.

Here is a stave I was debarking.

no, maybe i really am as dumb as a bag of hammers.

I wonder if the bark comes to look that way over time, because there are definitely lots of reds in the bark of these logs.  How old is your stave?

where i found this one, i also saw another fallen yew that was maybe 12 feet long, about 4" diameter at the butt, like this one.  I can maybe get 3 bows out of it, 2 from the main trunk and 1 from the end...i wanna skip work and go get that one today!
