Title: Hill style longbow
Post by: Moen on June 24, 2009, 05:45:00 PM
Hello, again folks.
I will make a Hill style longbow for my wife. (My first attempt at this type) My question is: Should I use all .001 taper? Glass-Norway Juniper- Actionboo-Norway Juniper-Glass. For riserwood, i will use Alder (Alnus glutinosa)
And yes, i promise to make a buildalong on TG, with LOT of pics:)

I think that would work just fine (a total taper rate of .003 per inch)...I usually use a total taper rate of .004 per inch on a longbow, but I think the hill bows used .002 per inch total taper.

I've used .003 and .004 total taper on my straight longbows.  I like .004 the best, because it has the best shooting manners.  The .003 was faster though.

Howard Hill Wesley Special longbows use .008 total taper in the limbs.  So far they have been one of the fastest and quietest hill style bows I have.  I have made .004 total taper and .006 total taper myself and the .006 was quieter, fast and had little handshock.

I suggest tapering all the core lams so you get 0.003. I don't know if you can taper the glass, that might help too. You can also do a pyramid style taper width to add to it.

I would taper all 3.

Or you could take a scrap piece of wood taper it, then stack it on top of your taper jig and taper another scrap piece.  That will give you a .002 taper piece and use that to make all three lams .002 taper giving you .006 total taper.
