Oh Yeah!! They will make you either chase a few more rings than intended or cut your staves up for firewood.

I know the feeling, the wood wasp here seem to drink the spray I use yearly.

I use a spray called 'Hi-Yield 38 Plus' and have real good luck with it.  I first started using it to control the ant and tick population around our house and it does an excellent job of that.  It will also kill a nest of wasps just like the spray cans.

Good luck. Is that Hickory? Try chasing the rings!  It can be a pain but it is alos a great lesson in control.  I have fought with those things too so I feel your pain.

You can stop this before it happens. After your staves are cut and split.Go to lowes buy some pestside and spray really well.Put away spray again in 6 months. After that I spray each spring.Your bug problem will stop and your ring chaseing will go way down.
