Title: Drying FRESH Calf Horns...
Post by: Talonzz on May 04, 2009, 05:08:00 PM
I have a friend that is a large animal vet and ends up doing alot of calf de-horning. I asked him to bring me some of the horn for nock overlays. I didn't realize just how many calves he dehorns in a weeks time...  WoW  How do I go about drying these things out so they don't stink up the joint? He just grabs them off of the ground with his shoulder length rubber gloves and turns the glove inside out and ties a knot in the end and throws them in a bucket in the back of his truck. They still have hair and a little bit of flesh and a whole lot of stink on them by the time I get them.  Help?

Put the horns in a big bucket of water, and boil them until you can pull the insides out of them.  They will look really nasty, but when they get loose, you can pull the whole inner core out...and have nice horns with a big hole left in them
