Here are some pics of the recurve I am building for my buddy Mark. The limbs are zebrawood, the riser is bocote, both from KennyM. It is the standard 58" Bingham takedown build. We are shooting for 55 @ 28".
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/keyman/bows/CIMG1686.jpg) The riser parts.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/keyman/bows/CIMG1687.jpg) Cooked riser.. MMMM good.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/keyman/bows/CIMG1710.jpg) My riser jig for cutting the limb pad angles all made from scrap.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/keyman/bows/CIMG1709.jpg) Pads cut and now on to the riser bolt hole. This is another jig I built for this purpose also from scrap. I cut the angle on the miter saw then glued and screwed it all together after confirming square with a square.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/keyman/bows/CIMG1712.jpg) Moment of truth.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/keyman/bows/CIMG1714.jpg) Tap tap taparoo....
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/keyman/bows/CIMG1716.jpg) inserts inserted and epoxied.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/keyman/bows/CIMG1707.jpg) The limbs. What a beautiful pair huh? Shame to have to tape them back up.

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v42/keyman/bows/CIMG1719.jpg) Didn't get a pic of the bolt hole process but it is much the same as the index pin hole. This is a trick I learned from another post about 3 pctake downs and limb alignment. Bolt the limbs to the riser before drilling the index pin. Lay the whole thing flat on the table and snug the limb bolts up and then determine the spot to drill the index pin hole through the limb and into the riser at the same time. Fool proof way to make sure everything lines upgood and purdy.

Jim, thats going to be a beauty! Love them limbs!

Those riser wood combos are nice- they will go well with the limbs. Nice ideas on the jigs. Looking forward to seeing more keep up the good work.

Nice work!!! Can't wait to see the finished bow.

Cocobolo for the limb butt over lays. NOTE: Don't let the smoothon get into the the holes for the limb hardware!!! Results in having to re-drill the holes.

Thanks for the tips!! That is a awesome piece of bacote for the riser... I like your drilling jig, been tring to figure how to make one. Thanks!!!
-
Nice.
What length the riser? Seems long for a 58".
Yer shop it entirely too clean and organized! LOL
-
Lookin good Jim!!
Is it ready to shoot yet?
-
Riser is 19". We left the limbs a bit long to lower the weight to 45lbs.
Your joking about the shop right DCM? We could get anymore clutter in there! LOL!
Kenny, we have to do a lot more work on the riser and get the limbs pulling straight.
-
looking good!!!!

We got the riser roughed out a little more last night. Still have a lot of fat to trim on each end but she's coming along.

Yeah, that looks awesome!

:clapper:

With the final triming it will be a looker and a good shooter I hope.

Looks good so far! 2 questions:
Will you be covering that limb alignment pin hole on the back of the limb?
How long are your limb pads?
On that limb bolt, I have had the insert come loose before when I drill and insert it from the back side of the riser. The epoxy never failed it would seem to just break the wood around it and pull out.
I now drill the initial hole from the back throught the riser to the belly side, the size of the bolt, usually 5/16. Than I use this hole to counterbore the bigger hole for the insert, drilling from the belly side to the back, about half way through the riser. Than I insert the insert, up to the end of the counterbore. These sizes are for 5/16-18 bolts, if you use 1/4" adjust accordingly. To cover up the hole on the belly side of the riser I lam a piece of thin stock over it, matching the risers look.
No failures yet!

I'll have to measure the limb pads after I do the final limb to riser shaping. The limb alignment hole on the limb was drilled straight through then covered with the cocobolo overlay.

The insert hole was drilled from the front. I use smoothon on the threads as I insert it with a 5/16 bolt and a jam nut.

Looking good Jim.

Looking good. Can't wait to see the finished product. Chad

I haven't worked on this bow unless my buddy is there. I'm letting him do most of it so he learns and just provide advice when he is getting ready to do some irreversable damage.
Maybe this weekend we can get it to the shooting stage.
-
I bet he is gonna love it when he shoots the first arra off it!!
You are gonna let him shoot it first , right? :D
-
Yeah I'm going to... if I can control myself! LOL!
One of my buddy's "self correcting" mistakes. Belt sander is only your friend when you feed it wood..

That cocobolo overlay looks awesome with those brass washers!
-
Yeah I think it will be awesome looking bow when finished. My buddy is picking up bowmaking pretty fast. I think he will have enough knowledge to get his own started when we are done with this one.

Ouch Someone drew first blood. Its looking good there Jim.
