My middle son was home on leave this past week and liked my new design of d/r so much that I agreed to make him one. Since there is no hurry(need to have it done by spring 2010...)I thought I would try to take enuff pics to do a decent buildalong....
Here is what he decided on for wood, laid most of it out on the bench here. Coco riser with black glass canine accent, jatoba belly, some zebra .025s that have broken corners(can't sell em) and clear glass. Will have walnut edge grain core, but didn't get it in this pic.....
Notice the coco has a little defect also,I'll try to work around it :)
-
 Thats gonna be nice Kenny, can't wait to see how this one progresses.
-
I'll be watching- those woods should make a great looking bow.
-
:goldtooth:
-
Tonite,I cleaned up the riser and cut all the rough and wax off, then ran it thru the thickness sander to get 1 5/8" x 2" riser block.
Then marked center on the riser block and laid out the canine radius (with a 5 gal bucket top!! LOL)Also sanded the slick side of a .050" x 1.5" black glass for the canine accent(I wanted to put white in,but Brandon said black!)
Then cut all the lams for the bow cept the zebra which was already cut and sanded to .025"
Here is a .001"taper being cut by running a .001" sled thru the bandsaw along with the stock. This way you get side by side lams without grinding from parallel, which grinds away some of the grain structure. The lams bookmatch much closer this way!
The cutting sled...
Here the jatoba parallels go into the sander...
The inspector....
More Friday............ :wavey:
-
this is gonna be good. like the wood choice.
-
The inspector looks like nothin is gettin by without the proper specs!! :readit: :)
-
Looking real good kenny.
Shawn
-
Get on with it man! Can hardly wait!
-
Gotta get those orders out Marty!! LOL
Back to it this afternoon!
-
OK, had a bit of time (after mowing yard)
First thing,I sliced the riser to put the black glass canine in...
Then cut the glass to length, about 3/4" longer than each cut...
Now to true up glue surfaces...
The thin piece needs a backer to keep square, the big piece works just right...
Only 1 gap,off to the sander to adjust.....
-
Now to pin the end to keep slippery parts in line!! Note I have marked the riser cut line so you can see I don't drill into the part to be used(note toothpick to right of drill bit)....
Laid out ready to glue...
The alignment pin in action....
Clamped up,,first I lay a piece of wrap on the bench and apply glue to all parts. Elongate the alignment holes a bit for the angle, then you can move parts to line up centerline while clamping.
Squeeze the parts together by hand, wrap the plastic over, then apply 1 quick clamp in the middle. Then the osage blocks and spring clamps hold parts in line side to side. Then start clamping back to belly way while adjusting centerline and whatever else needs it. Good thing smoothon doesn't dry too fast!! LOL
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/100_2027.jpg)
-
Looks great so far, Kenny! Man I love these build alongs. :D
-
Yesss! I've been waiting for this!
-
Do you put an index at each end of the accent?
-
Thats a handy tip on the indexing Kenny thanks.
Shawn
-
Jim, I only pinned the end with the narrow pc of riser on this. Not sure I could get two pins to line up! The little osage blocks and spring clamps keep it side to side,so only really need 1 pin.
-
The pin idea has just saved me a ton of time, you are the man.
Bill
-
All righty,back to it.
Got the riser out of the clamps and cleaned and squared up. Marked out the shape and the exact length,I leave it long during accent glue up til I get ready to cut profile on it......
Now to splice the lams. I just clamp a square block on the disc sander table at an unknown angle(pleasing to eye) to skive the lams. Figure the side you want showing and push them BOTH in the jig til it grinds the one close to the wheel to a feather end. Then swap places with them and grind the other one. If you run them both at the same time, the angle will match perfectly.
The results...
Lay a piece of plastic on a strait bench or board, lams on top of it and apply CA,you have time to work with it if you coat both pcs.....
Line up the lams, being sure to check full length straightness, flip the plastic over, add a clamp block and clamp. Give it 20 minutes to set,and take out and sand off any glue.
-
Got the fades ground, 1/16" at 1" from tip,1/8" at 2" from tip........
Then I put a stop on the flat of the riser with 2 spots of CA,to give a place for the lams to push up against. It is roughly the thickness of the belly veneer, .001" taper and glass combined...
Got the form prepped, silicone spray first, then plastic wrap....
Here are the parts laid out ready to go....
Glue is mixed, those are plastic bathroom cups, takes me 1 3/4 cup of each part of the smooth on to glue up a bow with 4 prs of wood lams and 2 pcs glass....
Here my bro applies the glue with a simple paddle. In this pic ,he is gluing the last veneer to go on the belly.
-
Bow is all glued and in the form, taped down securely....
Another layer of plastic wrap under the pressure strip.(no pic)
We taped the pressure strip (sheet metal strip to equalize pressure across bow limbs, since the air hose pushes mainly in the center)this time to keep it in place....
Here is the form almost ready to pop in the oven.....
One last thing,if you wipe the glue down off the limb edges all you can, you can break most of it off instead of grinding it all off!!
-
Excellent...can't wait to see more!!!!!
-
This is getting good.
-
That really clears up a lot of questions I had! Thanks for the play by play and pics!
-
This could not have worked out better for me i have had a Coco riser ready for about ( will about ready)
6 mos. Looking forward to this Thanks for taking your time and sharing. And the lams i got off you for my first bow. its still shooting great and is my best shooter so far.
-
Thanks guys, more comin!
-
Here is the glue that snapped right off,and the bow blank..
This is a new deal for me,I like it!! Clamped a simple laser to a stand, leveled the bow on the bench and lined up center marks on both ends and center. This bow was good, needed no adjustment.
IMO if both tips and center of riser don't line up,you are goin down a hard road!!
I pulled the tape off and put on new white tape for visibility, now I clamped an aluminum ruler to the centerline and drew the centerline full length of the bow.
Now I marked the tips 5/8" wide at nock, they will end up narrower before finishing.
-
Here the limb is laid out,and ready to grind.
Ground the limbs to shape and now to the nock grooves, starting marks are 45 degrees for this bow, make sure they angle the right way!! LOL
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/100_2054.jpg)
I didn't get any pics of the groove filing, just keep em even.
-
Now on to the overlays, sanded and taped ,ready to glue on,the back handle overlay area..
The belly handle overlays areas..
Tip overlay area
(http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d34/kennym/100_2057.jpg)
Now back to the shop!! :bigsmyl:
-
Awesome build Kenny, love the laser. :campfire:
-
Coming along pretty fast. I love the laser idea.
-
Here is putting overlays on,I'm using CA this time.
Now to cut the sight window, not recommended for the faint of heart.
I stand behind the saw so I can see the blade, cut til the blade gets to the desired mark, then turn the bow around and cut from the other side, so I don't splinter the glass if there are not overlays protecting it.
-
Here we go after more whittling..

And profiles...
Was gonna edit out the belly, but figured what the hell,I'd still have it!! :D
-
Oh yeah, shot it a bit, shoots great, will finish it up next weekend I hope!
-
What a build.. Looks excellent.. I love the full draw profile of the bow.
-
NICE!!
-
Thanks for the build Kenny. Couple of good tips in here. Will be making some orders this week.
Shawn
-
Kenny, you should inserted abs of steel. you woulda still had the belly, but we woulda been mighty impressed.
-
Nice table sawin!! Whatcha finishing with? Full draw looks great!!
-
Thanks guys!!
Figured the trad police would be knockin on my door for usin the laser!!
Greg, I will use spar urethane,it works well for me. Bro tryed some spray stock finish on one,but it left white marks if bumped.
-
You said 1 3/4 cup.. is that an actual measuring cup or one of the little cups seen in the pic?
-
That is 1.75 of those little white plastic(no wax!!) cups, about 1/4" from top of the second one.
My wife wonders how we go thru those so fast! :saywhat:
Sanded and sealed riser with CA tonite ,really brings the coco to life!!!
-
I use the little plastic pee cups from the prison, they are marked in oz's. They are about the same size.
-
New ones ,right? LOL
That is 1.75 cups of each component. Might get by with less, but I figure you can't put more in later if it needs it!
-
Yeah definetly! When I get a little further on my buddy's T/D/ recurve I'll get started on MY bow. Can't wait!
-
I use the white dixie cups also. My wife is always gettin on the kids about using them up so fast. Just adds to the "wasnt me" mystery. :)
-
how do you make the lams in the bandsaw?I cant really see from the photo, great build by the way...
-
Great job Brother! I'm enjoying this one. I have to get me one of those lasers!
-
Nice build Kenny! The laser looks so....futuristic! lol
-
Mox, I cut the lams on the bandsaw, then run thru a thickness sander. On the tapers,I run the proper sled(.001"per "..002" per" etc.) along with the stock so I have a tapered blank to grind.
Marty, the laser rocks,I think if the bow is level across the limbs, you won't get it any straiter. If out of level,I think it will lead you astray tho.
rkmt, that is why I've been expecting to be raided by the trad police!!
-
Trad Poleece, hear: As long as you ain't using that funny little red lite on an all wud bow then wheel jist have to keep lookun the other way.
-
I also used the laser to mark the marks for limb layout lines, cause if you don't get your yardstick clamped flat on the limb,it can be not strait!
Kenny, aka multiple offender... :D

Great job Kenny, that is a sweet lookin bow. If he don't like it, send it to me and I'll make payments :bigsmyl:
-
-
Dano,I may have to break it in for him a bit. Wanna shoot it at Mojam??
Did y'all notice the inspector is cuttin me some slack? She stays close to the pond when its 75 out!
-
Very nice Kenny.
-
Wow, that is one sharp looking bow.
-
I'd like that Kenny. She's a pretty smart dog.

Very nice! I hope mine comes out that good!
-
Thanks Bill!
Jim, I don't think you have any worries!!
-
SaaWeeeet!
-
Turned out great Kenny
-
Nice work Kenny! The guy you get your wood from must be pretty good..lol...awesome combination.
Don
-
Great Job. Thank you for sharing.
-
Good looking bow...nice dog also!!
-
What did it weigh in at for draw weight?
-
Jim, it was .360 and made 50# @ 28" Still tweaking on weight/thickness on this form....
-
Its an amazing bow Kenny...your work is great and those belly lams have a really nice effect.
-
Thanks Brad, but I confess, every one has a defect!! :banghead:
-
Yeah.. I have yet to build one that is defect free. I wonder if the big name bowyers have this same issue. A lot of the time I think it is only the bowyer him/herself that sees them... I HOPE!
-
Yeah, my wife says I am too critical of myself! :knothead:
-
One fine bow! I think that is good (to be critical of ourselves) keeps us on our toes. By the way, the lazer that I use is mounted above the bench and it lays a line down across the table. Five bucks at Harbor Freight!
-
if you were to sell such a bow, how much would said bow cost?
-
Nice!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Thanks guys!!
mikieg,I don't sell bows, just the parts to build em and some free advice occasionally! LOL
Here is my site....

-
Kenny,
When you lay out the limbs, I got the 5/8" at the string grooves. Is the other end of the limb lines to the centerline or to the end of the fadeouts?
Teagus
-
I go out a couple inches past the fades, then strait line to tips. Then when I blend the limb to the strait portion thru the riser,I suppose it is close to the fades.
-
TTT. Excellent buildalong. By the way, what happened to Dano, kind of miss his posts. :) Bue--.
