Title: Bamboo Backing
Post by: gables on April 07, 2009, 02:33:00 PM
I am working up my materials list and process for my 3rd laimnated bow. This nex bow will be the first to build with lams I have ground myself. I want to put a natural bamoo backing slat on it with minimal finishing of the nodes (kept slightly raised). I have built my previous bows back down against my form with the inflated hose. How do I deal with the radius issue with natural bamboo backing? Do I need to build a form where I laminate it belly down against the form?

If i understand you right, you dont need to make a new form. I have glued lots of boobacked bows with "firehose". But I recommend you to use tape on the laminates.

The air hose should contour around the uneven boo back with no problem. Like Moen said tape all the compnents together first. Keep an eye on the pressed bow as it cures to be sure it doesn't slip from one side or the other.

You'll have to make another form so you can use it with the nodes up against the hose, belly down on the form.

If you want to make a one sided form, use can use clamps of innertube bands.  I use the bands cut from bicycle tubes.

No-Sage,

I like the form. Is that a 2x6 and how far apart are your dowels for the bands. They look about an inch apart.

I don't have a template.

The dowels are 1 1/2" apart.  I use 2 clamps at the deepest part of the deflex to hold everything down, then after all the bands are on, I don't need the clamps anymore.

PATb.......if u wrap ur bow tight wirh stretch
wrap before u close the form. it will help
keep eveything together tight. u can see my post
further down....how i use the stretch wrap. Now I
use Box Grip 100 and ir has about a 30 min work time
before it starts to set so u have plenty of time to
do the wrapping. just a working solution....

Anything that will hold your lams together while you set the press up and get the hose inflated will work. I've never used stretch wrap and have only made one glass bow but having that "extra hand" really makes a difference in the end.
