Title: Herbs Bow
Post by: Pat B on March 22, 2009, 05:56:00 PM
At the NC State Championships last year, Herb Reynolds ask me to build him a bow. Herb was the founder and life time president of The Carolina Traditional Archers, the sponsors of the N.C. Traditional Archery Championships. I found and bought an osage stave from one of the venders at the shoot and over the weekend Herb and I discussed the details of the bow he wanted.
A few weeks after the State Shoot I was saddened to hear of Herb's death. The bow that he and I discussed was going to be very specific for him. I decided to build a bow anyway but not the bow Herb and I discussed.
After contemplating the man, and all he had done for traditional archery in the North Carolina and elsewhere, I decided on a more traditional and universal style of bow. I will donate Herb's Bow to Carolina Traditional Archers, to be raffled off at this years State Championships, in Herb's honor.
She is a traditional American Longbow style, 68"t/t and drawing 50#@28". I backed the bow with cherry bark from a friend in Oregon(Joe Klink) and used deer antler and ipe for the tip overlays. The handle is ambidextrous with a leather wrap and the arrow rests are small leather wedges.
Here are a few pics of Herb's Bow....

Anyone should be honored to  have a bow such as that! I am sure your friend is looking down with a smile. I think that your friend would also be happy that you are donating the bow like that also. Love that cherry bark!

Thanks everyone. Herb was a very special person. He would appreciate and approve of his bow going to help support his club. I was honored to be asked by Herb to build him a bow.
I have put over 100 arrows through Herbs bow and she was braced for 4 hours before the pics were taken today. I'm quite pleased with her outcome...plus she shoots very well.

Pat that is a beautiful bow and would be a great selfbow in any circumstance. However it has attained an even higher level due to the amount of heart and soul you have imbued it with. You are a great bowyer and an even greater person.
Great job.
