Interested in these bows. Who is shooting one?
-
ME!...but I shoot more than one!
-
i shoot one but i didn't make it . mine is one peice hickory with rawhide backing. it is 66" long, pulls 45#@28" draw. i shoot cedar arrows from it that are in the 45-50#spine group its a great shootin bow and ive had it for a long time. it does not have the performance of the glass backed bows ,but its really quiet. its also very forgiving if you dont do everything just right. this was also my first trad bow. check out som of the other self bows made here on the site. mr patb makes some fine lookin bows , ive seen pics . everyone who shoots a self bow can attest that they are not carbon copy bows. each one is very unique in its own way. every selfbow also has its unique beauty.also every selfbow out there is extremely quiet. 10,000 yr old technology still goin strong

Me to I've been building and shooting selfbows for 18 years.33 bucks 7 gobblers unknown number of ground hogs squrrils and rabbits. There just as deadly as any other bow.Maybe not as fast but you will get far more enjoyment than buying a new bow each year to stay in the 300 feet a second click.
DEAD is DEAD no matter how fast your arrow gets there.

I"M kinda got my first one done, and will probably go that route.although I shot my kymsha, today in balt.
-
me.
-
Can't help it. That's one in my avatar.
-
I shoot the latest one I made... usually osage @62-64" NTN and maybe 55# at 29".
I would claim I am some kind of purist BUT the truth is:
1. I am not handy at detailed precise work, and
2. I am cheap.
Self-bows are the BEST fun for the money. Th people I meet thru self-bows are even BETTER.
-
They're all I hunt with.
They're all I ever shoot, too, unless I'm shooting FITA, then I shoot one of those tricked out, fancy, metal handled, Olympic recurves.
90M is heck on arrows when you're shooting a selfbow. I do shoot my selfbows for field archery, but the max distance there is only 80 yds. ;)

I build and shoot self-bows, have for 10yrs or so now. I just fininshed three more this winter. Tried my hand at shorter flat bows so I could shoot one easly out of blind. My normal bow is 66 to 68 inch bend right to the handle longbow. The last two have been 62 inch bind to the handle wide flat bows (Torges style).
I love my "starvation sticks".
Now if I could only choose one to stick with and shoot. So many bows so few hunting seasons.

I just shot a 3D course on Saturday morning with my newly finshed Hickory static recurve. It is backed with sinew, though. I was tempted to take the working handle osage selfbow I'm putting the final details on but the recurve won out.
-
I do. I feel kind of bad my Super Kodiak just sits on the bow rack now.
-
Not yet but finishing my first bows and will hopefully get a shooter out of them.
-
I shoot and make boo backed bows. Close to a self bow. Love them
-

-
I recently started shooting them. They are alot of fun thats for sure.

You can't beat it.

I do now that I've gotten into building them. Paul<><
-
I do, I do!
make 'em and shoot 'em
-
I do. I just have one glass bow. And never shoot it. Dean
-
how short can you make them, safely without backing??
-
Depends on design and draw length. PatB had a posting for a all wood recurve on here a few weeks ago and I think it was about 48".
-
A good rule of thumb is twice your draw length plus 20%. If you are more experienced add 10%. An old rule of thumb for a self bow says...a bow fully drawn is 9/10th broken...so a bow that is just twice your draw length is almost broken. The extra 10% is insurance!
Tony, it is 60". I have built shorter bows but sinew backed them or shortened the draw length.
-
I do too. I recently started building bows and now have about 10 under my belt (only blown up 3 :) ). I haven't killed anything other than paper yet, but the moose I got with my compound last year was only 14yds out so I could have easily done it with one of my stick bows!
-
I started to make bows with glass the last autumn, but also now bows of a stick - my favourite toys. Each such bow is done by magic - superfluous wood is removed only. I made hundreds, and itself I shoot with pleasure!

I have made 122 so far, been shooting them exclusively since 96.
-
Started making them last year and their nearly all I shoot anymore :D :D
-
I love mine and yours! Why don't you send more of yours to shoot?
-
I've been building and shooting selfbows since 95. Currently shooting an osage recurve that my good friend Allan made me. First time since 95 that I've hunted with a bow other than mine.
Boy, he makes a nice bow.

I make and shoot them. There isn't a bigger thrill than shooting an arrow with a bow you just made youself.
-
I've been building and shooting self bows for the past 3 years. They are really addictive, and lots of fun . :)
