Title: Solvent blues!
Post by: Apex Predator on March 17, 2009, 05:22:00 AM
This is going to sound off topic, but I assure you it's not!

I buy my acetone and lacquer thinner in the one gallon jugs to save money.  I keep smaller cans around for everyday use and re-fill them from the larger ones.  There is no good way to pour from the larger jugs without making a huge, dangerous mess!  Have any of you folks seen a screw on spout that will fit these jugs?  The people at the hardware store looked at me like I had three heads when I asked.

If you turn the jug around and pour it with the handle facing away from, you may be able to control the flow a ittle easier. Grip the neck of the jug and put your fingers through the handle. Sounds strange but can really work.

I do the same thing. I get a plastic jug or a metal can, and then put it in a smaller bottle or qt.can. If you pour the plastic jug "backwards" like razorback said or pour either of them out the side of the spout it will help. As the  1 Gal. jugs get empty the job gets easier. A funel will help also. That first "GULP" of air is the killer.

You might try a siphon pump, like used for gasoline. It has a squeeze bulb for pumping the liquid.

I use a siphon pump to pump kerosene from a 5 gal can to my little space heater. works with no mess.
You can usually pick one up for 6-10 bucks at the same places they sell indoor space heaters and the clean burning fuels. For me thats Home depot or Lowes.

The problem is the size of the cap.  I would love to find a screw on pour spout to fit these cans.  I really hate to slop that stuff all over my shop.

Coleman makes a spout for the white gas cans.  It should work for your need, depending on the threads on the can.

We have a snap on funnel here at work for those steal cans. Don't know where it came from but someone makes them.
