Title: Truoil & snakeskin
Post by: TRB on February 18, 2009, 09:33:00 AM
I was thinking of backing my take down recurve (Palmer} with snakeskin. I understand most use truoil as a finish over snakeskins. My question is. Is truoil a gloss finish? Would a matt finish dull the looks of the snakeskin?

I use TruOil on every bow I make. TruOil gives a gloss finish so I do a quick spray of satin poly to cut the shine, especially on hunting bows.

You don't have to overdo the spray. A quick shot from handle to tip is all it takes.

I just hit the tru oil with 000 steel wool and it gives it a satin finish.

...but once it rubs against your cloths it will shine right back up again. The satin poly is more permanent IMO.

I do exactly like Pat. Five or six coats and a light spray of Minwax satin poly. Be sure to get all of the scales off before hand.
