Title: Three glue questions!!
Post by: crossstickspro on February 15, 2009, 03:52:00 PM
IM gonna get my wife into shooting with a special project.... ok not too special. An oak board bow red oak and poplar layerd handle/riser with cotton (pink zebra print) backing. I was thinking of covering the back and belly with it but I had a few questions
1. will titebond2 work for red oak and poplar riser lams
2. What kind of epoxy can I use on a cotton backing that will dry clear and not cause dye to run or bleed?
3. can I use regular fiberglass cloth and resin to protect the cotton.
.....Im aiming for 42# at 26in And a 62in AMO english long bow
Thank you in advance.
Larry

Question #1- yes but I think TBIII is better. It is more water resistant.
#2- You can use the TB on the backing. If the yellow color isn't acceptable use Elmer's white glue. It dries relatively clear and will work fine for a cloth backing on a bow.
#3- you can probably use glass cloth and resin but it is not necessary. Once the glue soaked cloth cures out and you get a finish on it, it will be protected.
An ELB style bow isn't appropriate for red oak in my opinion. You can make one but the a flat bellied bow is more appropriate for red oak. A more compression strong wood would be more appropriate for an ELB style bow. You could easily make a 62", 42#@26" American longbow(ALB) or flat bow with red oak.

On 26 " ELB from an oak I would advise 64 + " lengths, or the bow will take the big set.

I agree with Pat 100% on the wood/glue mix.
