Title: Ski Bow
Post by: Phoenix 1967 on February 13, 2009, 09:30:00 PM
I promised a couple of fella's on the knifemaking sid ethat I would post a pic of my ugly old bow made from a pair of snow ski's.
I made it in 1987... so I guess it's 22 years old now. She pulls around 90lb at full draw (for me that's 31 inches) The riser is made of badly laminated oak (hey, it was a first try!)but it has never failed.

That is perhaps the most insane looking bow I have ever seen!

I love it!

Thanks.

Now, that's what we call "mak'n do"  - Way to think outside the box.  It's insanely beautiful in its ugliness.  Congrats.- you must surely be a fee wheelin spirit to cobble something like that!

No fella's, insane was making the first riser out of yellow pine. after a week, the wood dried out, and broke at the grip.... at full draw. the string whipped the two halves around me and liked to broke my ribs. THAT is when I decided on oak... It's held up well for 22 years, has taken muleys and elk in MT, whitetails here in SC, and spent many a day on the range. She's ugly, but she's faithful LOL

That is Yanke,,, err, I mean rebel ingenuity at it's finest.  :biglaugh:
Is there a reason you made the handle so long and the limbs so short?

I have a pair of kids cross country ski's that I am thinking of doing a similar thing to. Wasn't sure what to do but a takedown seems like the way to go.
Thanks
