Title: A Grizzly Question..which is strongest?
Post by: Hornseeker on February 05, 2008, 10:32:00 PM
So..which Grizzly is THE strongest... I was thinking about it. The "normal" size one comes in several weights, from 100 up to 160 grains. SO...if they are the same dimensions (length/width) the 160 is going to have more thickness right? Are they actually made of thicker steel??

The El Grande 190 is bigger, but not a lot heavier, only 30 grains, so I bet its a weaker head than that normal sized 160...and the El Grand 160 has got to be the weakest of all...

Just some thoughts I was pondering. I bought some regular sized 160's and mounted them on 100 grain adaptors tonight... I think they are going to be unbeatable...

Ernie... I think you made a good choice for stout! Of course they're all tough as nails.

I believe your conclusions are pretty accurate and consistent with what I've experienced.  All Grizzlies are very tough, except for the 100's which push the limits of the design somewhat IMO.

The 160 and the 190 are the same thickness, however until recently the 190 was substantially harder which made them tougher still.  The hardness on the 160 was boosted last year but still not quite up to the 190/150 El Grande level.

Anyway, IMO the 190 and 160 are the toughest of the tough in that order.  Everything else 125 and up is a fine head in it's own right.  I've used most all of them but have taken more game with the 125 than any other and never had the slightest hint of failure.

Your 160's on steel adapters should be about bomb proof.

I was reading through a bunch of Ashby's posts and reports last night and he definitely believed that the 190 was by far the toughest...

I'll try my hand with the 160's...for whites, lope and elk....Im sure they are MORE than enough tough!

Ashby had troubles with the 160, but he had some older softer ones.  In fact it was Ashby's mishaps that prompted Grizzly to up the hardness on the smaller Grizzlies.  I believe the newer 160's are pretty close to a match in toughness to the 190 although the Rockwell on them is still a little lower.  Target on the 160's is 51 Rockwell and the 190's is 52.

You really can't go wrong with a Grizzly.

The 190 is the toughest of the tough in my opinion.  I've blown right through a whitetails leg bone with that head...and that's with a 47# bow!

Not that I'd ever buy one...well...maybe one...but think about if that Silver Flamer fellow built an Ashby Special with the same quality and such that the Flame is... ahhhhhhhhh, just the thought!

THanks for your opinions guys..
