Title: J-Mac's Bow
Post by: John Scifres on January 24, 2009, 04:43:00 PM
Here's the first bow I have made in about 6 months.  I actually started it about a year ago.  Been a busy year.  I can't wait to stay in the saddle a bit  :)   It looks better at full draw but John's a pretty tall guy and draws 30".  I don't.

Good looking bow, John. I sure like the contrast of the walnut and osage.  Makes covering that handle area quite a dilemma...  Do you normally do a cut-in shelf?

I've got a shorter draw length and am hoping to make a bow for a long-armed friend.  I'm still pretty green at bowyering, so I admit that am finding it a bit intimidating.  Any advice for getting it right?

Glad you are back in the saddle.  Ride on!
Hojo

I pretty much play it by ear as far as the handle shape.  This one was at the request of the future owner.

Advice?...get Dean Torges' book "Hunting the Osage Bow" and "Trad Bowyer's Bible Vol. I".  Here's my site:   John\\'s Webpage (http://residents.bowhunting.net/sticknstring/)

There's some bowmaking stuff on there.

I see you are from IN HoJo.  There's a BowBee in May in Morgantown.  I won't be able to make it but there are going to be plenty of experienced guys there.

Thanks for the heads up on the Morgantown gathering, John.  As I remember, I saw info for it last year, but had a conflict with family activities.  I'll stay on watch for dates as the time gets closer.
I've been to your site several times.  Your buildalongs were especially useful last winter when I was getting started.  A great source of information and inspiration.  Highly recommend it as a reference.  Dean's book is on my to-do list...
