Title: I need help identifying some heads.
Post by: New to Traditional on February 05, 2008, 07:52:00 PM
Hey all,
Picked up a bag of 10 of these broadheads today in a flea market for like $3.They are a one piece constructed three blade glue-on head with a greenish paint job. They are labeled "M-A3-L".They dont look like they'd be worth much and I think I've seen something like these before, but I'd like to know if anyone knows much about them. For one I have no idea how much they weigh and I also don't know how to go about sharpening these heads as the blades have a convex design.Figured I could at least use them for small game or,if for some reason they're collectible sell them to buy useful heads.Anyway I'd really appreciate some insight.Sorry no pics.

Thanks a bunch,
Ethan

Well Ethan, you did alright.  MA3's are a good solid head that has been around for eons.  Alhto used mostly as a small game head these days, they are still an effective head and used by a few for deer and such.  Their weight as I recall is 125 gr.  They are collectible, but also quite common and don't have much of a dollar value.    :(

They usually mount and shoot pretty well, and that is what I would do with them.    :archer:

I killed my first deer with an MA3-L
They are inexpensive but they work well. Later I used them as pactice heads instead of more expensive three blade heads for shooting cutouts broadhead shoots with dirt backstops. You can get them shaving sharp but they don't hold an edge well abd require touching up before each use in hunting. They were one of the first 3 blade heads that were fairly wide and they are almost as effective as Snuffers but Snuffers are tougher and avaiable in more weights and sizes.

If I recall right, they are made of three pieces of steel, forming the head and ferrule.  This means at each edge, there is two pieces of metal coming together (on the edge), making it just a bit difficult to get really well sharpened.   Deer have been killed using these heads and they worked well.   You will have to rock them a bit if you use a file or stone to get around the convex shape, but that is not a big deal.

Good find.
