I hope this is the right place to post this as a bow needs a string. I have made a few flemish strings and thank everyone who has helped me and others with the technique. I was wondering how you get those nasty little ends from sticking out or do you just cut them. Also, how do you pad the loops on a string. Thanks for all the help. Don

Don. I just cut those little tags off with scissors and wax the heck out of that area to hold the remainder down.
I have never had a need to pad the loops...well, I only use one loop and a bowyers knot with all the strings I make. Pat

Thanks Pat, That's what I do but was wondering if there was a secret to the ends. Don

Don, I cut the tags off with scissors as well. If you are using dacron strings you don't need to pad the string loops but if your using no stretch bow string I always pad the loops with dacron to bulk up and soften the loops up...Glenn...

I use fingernail clippers to remove the tag ends, then wax and rub with a piece of canvas.

IF YOU CUT THE ENDS AT VARYING LENGTHS, SUCH AS A STRING BOARD DOES, ALL YOU NEED TO DO IS WAX THEM. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO TRIM AFTER THE STRING IS MADE. BEFORE I START TWISTING IN MY LOOP I CUT EACH STRAND. FIRST ON FULL LENGTH THEN MAYBE 1/16 TO 1/8 OFF THE NEXT, 1/4 OF THE NEXT AND SO ON. THIS WILL GIVE YOU A NICE EVEN TAPER.

I do use a jig that I made and it gives varing lengths when making the string but I'm not sure how to get the ends from sticking out. I wax the ends a lot before starting the twisting. I was looking for a method of padding the loops as I've not seen this done. Thanks, Don

Don padding is used on FF type strings and what I do is just add 3 short strings 8"9"and 10" on each bundle for a total of 6 strands per.Loop.

I also use a jig that gives varying lengths, but some of the tag ends still show (not all, but there always seems to be a couple are too long to hide in the twist). If one of the ends is a bit too long to be hidden in the twisting or after some use they start to show, then is when I use the fingernail clippers and wax the ends well.
Chad Weaver uses a method making a flemish twist by using an endless loop jig (in the DVD "Doin' the Twist"). All the ends come out the same length as he twists, but he alternately pulls them tight and cuts them off as he is twisting the loops, and it makes his strings look really nice.

I wondered how Chad did his, as I've bought some from him, and they are always perfect. Don

I forgot. Thanks Charlie, thats what I needed. Don

I burn the excess tag ends with a match. I pad by moving my length peg as close to the nails that set the splice as possible then run the extra strands from the nails just like when you start your string, around the length peg and back. Next cut the extra strands like normal and add half to each bundle. I sometimes use as manny pad strands as the string has so it is double padded at the loops.

Doin the twist is a great dvd !

After stringing my bow I take a razor blade and cut them off even.Wax it real good.

I leave them..... I tell folks they're built in string silencers.
