Title: Board bow questions
Post by: razorback on December 09, 2008, 05:38:00 PM
I am starting on my 2nd board bow. Will be 66-70"ntn and 40-45#. Is going to be made with the other half of the red oak board I made my first bow out of. The board wasnt as good as I thought and went bang at a runout. I am considering chasing a ring to get a consistent back to the bow.

Q1. Has any one done it this way

Q2. This will leave me about 3/8th" at the tips and still 3/4" at the handle for thickness. Does it matter that the taper is basically on the back as the belly is still the flat board.

Am I completely nuts for doing it this way. I am using it as some practice for chasing rings and generally experimenting.
Any and all comments are appreciated.

Tony

I will take some photo's of the board and try to work out how to post them.

It can be done but it is a lot of extra work. I would either back it with wood, silk or linen or get another board.    Pat

I backed my first with paper and that did nothing. How thin should I make the oak and what is a good wood to use with oak and at what thickness.

Chasing a ring might be fun and it could work.  If it were me, I'd get another board.  No sense banging your head against the wall with one you know won't cut it.

A good board makes this simple process easy.  A bad one makes this simple process complex.  Life's too short.

I'd get another board. Show us some pics of this one. Show the edge grain and the face. BTW there's board stuff on my site. But yes it can be done. If you have a few islands of wood on an otherwise continuos ring it may be easy enough for you. Jawge

After a more careful examination of the grain and the number of runouts i will humbly bow to the wisdom of those who have gone before me and get another board.
I thought this one was better than it is and I will now know better what to look for.
I may chase the grain anyway for the practice and use it as a zen like teaching tool, encouraging me to look more carefully. Or I'll add it to my lumber pile and use it for a piece of furniture my wife will have me make at some point.
thanks for the input.
