Title: Longbow with cracked glass a winner!
Post by: Apex Predator on October 29, 2008, 10:10:00 AM
I finished the longbow I found the glass crack in after glue-up.  She is 66" long and draws 55@28.  This one has a very beautiful figured bubinga riser, action boo cores, and osage limbs.  She turned out to be a nice bow.  She is beautiful, but the crack does take away some.  I have been shooting this one nearly every day for two weeks and the crack hasn't moved at all.  She's a winner after all!

Shame you couldn't get all the tool marks out of the riser wood.

I'm just kidding!  You do great work, I'm just busting your chops.  LOL!  I'm real anal about that in particular myself so I know what a pain it can be, and the investment in time it takes.  I see you did a fine job.  Congradulations.

Are you familiar with the concept of "skiving" leather?  The idea is you thin the outer edges so it lays flat w/ contact cement.  Adds a little sizzle I think.  I just use my belt sander.

I do that to thin out the strike plate, but haven't tried it on the grip wrap.  Good idea, and I'll have to give it a whirl.
Thanks, Marty

I got some free glass from a fellow a few years ago and a couple pieces were cracked like you have here.  I built bows with them anyway since I had my own lams and my own riser wood, so I really didn't have much expense in them.  I gave them both away pointing out the cracks and to the best of my knowledge both have held up just fine.

Of course it's usually best to do the opposite of what I do so good luck with the bow!!!   :)

I knew I should have offered to buy it for the cost of materials when I first saw it.   :knothead:      :bigsmyl:
