Title: A quarter in the riser?
Post by: Leo L. on September 19, 2008, 11:58:00 PM
Hey all. I'm working on my first osage selfbow.  I was just wondering if anyone has experimented with using a quarter forstner bit and embedding a quarter somewhere in the riser?  And if so, do you have a pic you can share?  Any tips on doing this, or not doing this?

Leo I've been thinking of doing the same thing on some bows I'm going to be building for the grandkids. Am looking at embedding the quarter from the state they live in. Haven't gotten to it yet but I figured I would have to take my dremel and rough up the back side of the quarter then use smooth on epoxy to glue it into the hole created by a forstner bit. If you try it let us know how it turns out for you.

Should work just fine. Make it a snug fit. The wood will swell a teeny bit when you glue it. It should hold just fine with epoxy.

Just watch for the guide screw on the Forstner bit so it doesn't go too deep in your wood.  Depending on where you are placing it, it might be better to use a hole saw in a drill press since there is no guide screw, or just chisel it.

i used a dremel and just took it slow then i fitted the coin to see if it was just right after getting it just so i put two part epoxy in the hole then pressed the coin home. done just like that. i am sorry but i dont have any pics but the next time i do one i will show some pics.

I gave it a try on a scrap piece of wood.  Pretty happy with the results so far.

It looks familiar to you ha Kenny?  Haha.  Thanks a million.  Be on the lookout in the near future for a new thread with pics of it in the bow.
