made a nice (short) bamboo backed ash bow about 2 years ago out of ash.  62" ntn and 74#@27".  Shot well for that season but since has gained some moisture because I failed to seal it well enough.  Has 1" of set now.

I'll be working on it when I get home.. Watching a house for a friend right now. I did hear the backing came in, so that's there too.

For a quick lay out try a Pyramid style bow.

I've read where the specific gravity of a particular wood tells alot about how good a bow wood it would make. A book I got recently has osage orange at 84, green ash at 71 and white ash at 64. Ash tends to grow straight and clean like hickory (80). I've been wanting to try ash. Tell us how it works out.

Post by: **DONOTDELETE** on August 28, 2008, 06:45:00 AM
are you at floor tiller Jeff? if not you can use the rasp to shave down the board to get the limbs to bend nicely then move to the knife to take small shavings of wood off.
Title: Re: american white ash slow build finished
Post by: JEFF B on August 28, 2008, 03:12:00 PM
hell no bro i am still taking wood off . like i said it is a slow build LOL!!!! hey sal those usmc knives are real handy from cutting wood to shaving it not to forget skining deer and chopping them in to bits.  :biglaugh:  any way must do some more shaving on the board later people.

Title: Re: american white ash slow build finished
Post by: Dano on August 29, 2008, 08:54:00 PM
I think you oughta go to a long string, just take it slow and don't pull it over your desired draw wieght.
Title: Re: american white ash slow build finished
Post by: JEFF B on August 29, 2008, 09:58:00 PM
now if its say #50 at 15" and i want to make it #45 at 26" what must i do? when do ya cut the string nocks in the bow? thanks guys
Title: Re: american white ash slow build finished
Post by: **DONOTDELETE** on August 29, 2008, 10:06:00 PM
are you going to keep the 45#? then you will take small amounts of wood off but stay at the 45# and watch the bends. You'll tiller it to be 26"@45#.

Your next mark will be 45# @ 16" then 17" then so on & so on till you get to 26"
Title: Re: american white ash slow build finished
Post by: JEFF B on August 29, 2008, 10:08:00 PM
yes i want  to  keep it at  #45 oh i see. hey thanks sal. but if ya take more wood off does that not lower poundage ?
Title: Re: american white ash slow build finished
Post by: **DONOTDELETE** on August 29, 2008, 10:27:00 PM
Yes, but Your tillering it, You want it to bend in the limbs to reach the 26" mark at 45 #..

After you scrape some more, You'll see that at 15" it wont be 45#. You're keeping the 45# but moving the bend out more.
Title: Re: american white ash slow build finished
Post by: Dano on August 29, 2008, 10:36:00 PM
Jeff, if you could pull the bow to 26" right now, the draw wieght would probably be 75-80# For every inch of draw the bow will gain roughly 3#. That's why you bend a bow slowly under your draw wieght removing flat spots in the limb and keeping the limbs balenced (bending the same). Here's some good reading it might help you more.

That is looking really good Jeff! I start getting anxious to get to full draw at about this stage but you've got to keep going easy. Learn from my mistakes!

Seems a little stiff in the right limb, midlimb and towards the tip. Otherwise looking very good! At what length draw are you hitting your target wt?
BTW, good job on taking 2nd place!!

I worked to to much, I learned from it and that's what counts. I did use the rasp more on the limbs then I did with the other bow, That and having the limbs twist didn't help.
Title: Re: american white ash slow build finished
Post by: Pat B on September 01, 2008, 03:39:00 PM
Jeff if you are moving the tips 16" it is time to brace the bow with a low, 3" to 4" brace height. You will get an incorrect reading using a long string much past 10" or 12". I try to low brace as soon as possible to see how the tiller is at that point and be sure the string is tracking OK. So far you look good on the long string but it is time to move on.     Pat

Jeff, sorry it took me so long to get here. I'm proud on ya! Coming along good and this is the kind of thread that helps others starting out - IMO. I feel that way because (like me/mine) you are learning, as you are doing, and it invites the advice of our more knowledgeable/experienced friends and members. Also your pics are good (and folks love pics).

I use my K-bar a lot as a scraper (although it doesn't seem to faze Hickory too much - LOL). If you can get ahold of (industrial size - aprox 1 1/2" front to back) used bandsaw blades,(like folks use for trade points, thin knives, etc.), cut them/it into 1 foot or so lengths, tape the tooth side, and sharpen the other (right angle/square edge) and, viola! -Instant srapers, that are nicely flexible. Just a thought - used by lots of folks. Here is a pic - the squareer one (in the right corner) is an old Stanly Tools brand Cabinet Scrapper, el cheapo - but works pretty good (not very flexible though):

Jeff, There was a guy who got them from where he worked, cut 'em, and would send some (as I recall 6 or 8) to folks for just 6 bucks to cover mailing (he was maybe realizing a few cents only on each shipping), just to share a good thing. If you don't find any let me know and I'll see if I can locate him again. Shipping to "Upsidedownartica" might be a little more but it is still a good deal, and he is pretty quick with getting them on their way.

Killie, I've seen you hit things even with your eyes open - even if you were looking somewhere's else at the time - but Dano's fast going up and down hills. (Just kidding, Lady  - you always outshoot me - overall - you don't get as tired as I do -   :archer:  )

Jeff the left limb looks to have a hinge in it. also the other limb needs to bend more near the mod-limb. But for your first bow it looks great.
Title: Re: american white ash slow build finished
Post by: JEFF B on September 09, 2008, 03:32:00 PM
well sel if i take anymore offit it would be around #30 or 35 any way it aint to bad for my first one. plus when i looked at the grain i saw that it runs off the side a bit. i didnot notice that when i startsd to make it. never mind the next one will have to be good grain but hell this is fun. LOL!!!! about the hinge if i take some wood out of the other limb say about the fade out that should fix that little problem.
Title: Re: american white ash slow build finished
Post by: Dano on September 09, 2008, 03:44:00 PM
Jeff, you would take wood off either side of the hinge, distributing the stress evenly. The right limb could stand to bend in the outer limb. I know your next bow will be better, My first bow looked a lot like yours.

The right limb has a flat spot in the mid limb. How long is this bow? you may me able to pike it (shorten) or heat treat the belly to gain a little wieght back. But I would get the tiller right, just because this is your first, it's a good lesson.

Good job on your first bow Jeff! Have you caught the bug now! Have you thought about what you want to seal it with? We want to see you build the next one too!

Jeff, you think it's funny - running by at warp speed like that and leaving "us" poor snails spinning in our shells?

Just kidding, buddy, those last pics don't look bad, especially for a first bow (and not the easiest of designs at that.) Oh yeah - you got the bug bad now. Like a termite, already looking for your next chunk of wood to gnaw on. Gonna be fun to watch you scurrying around huntin' staves n' boards.

Go git 'em, Kiwi Woof, sic 'em, and best to ya, my friend!
